Whatever happened to the whole acid rain thing back in the 90s before global warming? It occurred to me that I haven't heard squat about it in years... I kinda miss the acid rain paranoia. It was a simpler, saner time...

Acid Rain is still a problem in many parts of the world, especially in Eastern Europe, Russia, and China.

Only time I remember hearing about Acid Rain was the Simpsons episode when Homer's bowling Jacket was destroyed by Acid Rain while walking back into the Nuclear Power Plant.

Good point. By "we" I foolishly meant "North America and Western Europe". EDIT - and according to Wiki, we haven't beaten it here yet either, just rocked it back on its heels. Guess I called the match too early. Edited by Clark Kent - 01 May 2007 at 8:31pm |

Yeah, Southern Ohio is partially to blame because of all our sulfur rich coal...But I think enough people on the east coast had their cars ruined that they forced some regulations....so at least we're getting better about it...

Stupid treehuggers, always trying to keep us from our lovely acid forests.
And our lovely acid lakes.
Those silly scientists don't know what they are talking about. |

I love that! I remember hearing about it on the TV and science class. Never really cared, figured I was too young to do anything about it. |

Sulpher rich fossil fuels are one source of acid rain, another , which we still moniter today is the nitrogen compounds from combustion of gasoline primarily , for those of you who have to take your vehicles through emissions every year or so , you can find them listed as a test parameter , when those acid compounds are released into the atmosphere , they eventually combine (forget the exact chemistry )and decompose into very dilute nitric acid . so yeah , its still happening . but its been happening for so long now,,, its not news anymore . it hasnt gone away at all,,,,
