I have been contemplating getting a CF barrel for a new marker that I picked up. I want CF for the lightness, but have no experience with them. My choices as far as I see it are:

1. Deadly Wind Fibur - Uses Freak backs. Considering the cost of $90 + Freak Kit, I am looking at $150+ total investment.
2. HammerHead Mofo - Yeah I know.. rifled barrels. With one back they can be had new @ $ 110 with one fin, $180 for three, and shoot me if I actually opt for a 5 find package.
3. Stiffi - Probably the cheapest initial investment because I could just buy one ID size, but if I want more options, basically have to buy another barrel.

Before it's brought up, I know about J&J and Lapco barrels, I actually have 4 J&J's unfortunately, none of them are the right threads. With that said, would I truly be looking at a discernable difference in performance between the J&J and one of the above?

Please, if you respond, do so based on actual experience, not what you heard, not what hype you have read, but actual factual experience.

Thanks.

From what I've experienced (from about 3 years ago when I actually played), carbon fiber barrels were pretty much all the same, aside from Hammerhead. I have a Deadly Wind with Freak kit, and though really nice to have, it doesn't make it so much better then a kit from St!ffi Switch or Sly. I have no clue about Hammerheads though.

Definately pref to the J&J ceramic over carbon fiber.  Played with some hammerheads - they are truly amazing.

Stiffi's have a good feel to them - they're very quick, but that's what you're pretty much buying with any CF barrel.

hmm, I really dont understand what you mean by stiffis are quick. I find stiffi's are nice and light, fairly quiet, and overall good quality, but the other carbon fibre barrels you said will diliver the same results. I would go with DW, good company, good quality barrels, uses freak is great if you like the system and have them available to you, and just overall my preference.  Not sure I like the metal free idea for a barrel, its probably going to have some bugs for the first year or so, just like the majority of CF barrels did when they first came out.

hammerheads to me arent impressive, loud, fairly heavy, no more accurate than any other barrel/kit ive used,  and I really dont like supporting a company that had an idea and didnt alter it after they learned it didnt yeild any benefits.  Talked to a couple guys from hammerhead, they said they did there own testing and there barrel was always at least 20% better than the other barrels, but my own experiences as well as some other guys(the guys who did the barrel test, cockerpunk, some other guys with a camera and some extra barrels lying around...) have proved this to be a false claim.

Ive used a stupid amount of kits(i see one that looks nice, buy it, use it for a couple months-a year or two.) and always find it odd when someone raves about a product ive dealt with before but was not impressed with. Generally its because its either the only thing they have tried, or they are sponsored and more or less believe in the company/idea(haha met a bunch of guys who had wrote in marker "we want new sponsors,we dont like the guys who sponsor us now" on a banner with their team name/all their sponsors, which made me laugh...)

edit. oh PBnoob, sounds like your looking at a bunch of new gear, its always nice to find guys who like to improve things

They have what looks to be something new called a MOFO that is actually carbon fiber. Are you talking about this or the old ones?

I have pretty much gotten rid of my Tippmanns and been investing my time and $$$ into Automags. This is causing some additional changes. Seems like once you upgrade one thing, you have to upgrade something else, which leads.....

cockerpunk, taking the fun out of paintball. Mike, buy a Timmy! LOL

OldPBn, the Hammerhead is carbon fibre on the exterior only. Inside is the normal
HH rifled aluminum bore. At least you can still use a swab with it.
I hear the DW is a nice barrel too, I haven't used one though.

Well that sounds naughty.

On a serious note I run a Stiffi-front with a Freak back on my Auto Cocker and have been very happy with the results.  (It made a quite marker even quieter, is very accurate and stopped that annoying "roll-out."

I used to have a Stiffi on my old Sniper II and I sold it and ran with a 12" CP. The only significant difference between them was the weight. I was getting the same accuracy with both so I sold off the valuable one.

I was looking for weight benefits, but after picking up a J&J elite that I had laying around for my A-5, I realized how freaking light these are. I might just get one of those instead. I can get a kit with 5 back and three fronts for less than any of the base CF barrels.

I ran a J&J Elite kit for a while on my 'Cocker and was very happy with it.  I replaced it for reasons unrelated to performance.
