I decided today that I am going to order an M1 from the CMP. Have any of you ever ordered from them before? Any tips or issues? I am planning to order the "Special Grade" .308 Model for $995. Good deal?
"M1 Garand, CMP Special (.308) Allow 30-60 days for delivery.M1 Garand Springfield Armory receiver. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. A .308 spacer block is installed to prevent the loading of a .30-06 round into the chamber." |

You probably won't have to scrub cosmoline off of it. A few friends of mine got them, some minor stock refinishing.

Shorty's FIL has a .308 Garand. We both question why you'd get one instead of a .30-06, but it's your money. Not a bad price.

I reeeeeeeeeeeeally want a Garand. I'm not a CMP member though and I can't deplete my savings account. I'm selling a bunch of my dads guns locally and I hope somebody trades an M1 for something.
As for 308 vs .30-06, it seems tricky to find/shoot/buy .30-06. It seems like most commercial .30-06 is loaded too hot for a Garand with a stock gas plug, and its often too expensive and hard to find locally for me. If I reloaded I really wouldn't care, but I don't. As for surplus .30-06 it just seems like it is still expensive and kind of hard to find. Only surplus worth buying IMO is 5.45 and x54R. I do have about ~350 rounds of "surplus" 7.62 NATO though ![]() Truth be told, my dream Garand is an IHC that I would install a .308 barrel on. That way I could keep the original barrel and shoot the cheaper and more common .308

PPU .30-06 seems to work just fine for me at an affordable price.

The only reason I am planning on .308 over 30-06 is for ammo availability. I can get a can of 200 .308s for $175. I can get a can of surplus 30-06 for $98, but I am expecting that to dry up much sooner than the new manufacture .308.

I was at Gander Mountain about a week ago. They had an entire shelf full of 30-06 including the American Eagle for the M1. Gander no .308 and no reloading supplies like large rifle primers, powder and heads. The price was a bit steep, $25 for the American Eagle but they had it so I bought 2 boxes of it. |

I'd actually think that .30-06 would be less likely to be hoarded than .308/7.62NATO. Cabella's was out of most .308 last time I was there. The American Eagle stuff is worth it IMO, accurate stuff.

.30-06 M2 ball ammo is still pretty readily available, don't know why you'd think it was in short supply.

The CMP has a couple lots of 30-06 that are completely sold out. All they have left is some Greek stuff from the 60s. The .308 that I can get from them is about $.80 per round, whereas commercial 30-06 seems to be around $1+.

Reb, I'll take it
![]() All BSing aside, I've been doing some thinking about M1's and I decided I'm going to order one from the CMP if I don't get destroyed on my tax returns this year. I realized this is essentially my last chance at buying one for "cheap".

Negative. The Enbloc is...you may have to register the Enbloc and only put 7 rounds in it. Try wrapping your head around that. |

I'm not going to do that. First of all, how the hell do you register something that doesn't have serial numbers? Second of all, they can go to hell. |

Let 'em watch. I think they're going to be a bit more busy with the Sheriff's office that basically told him to go pound salt than he is my not registering a half a dozen stamped metal en blocs.
