shooting your marker without paint.

A gun is not a weapon... It's a tool. Like a butcher knife, or a harpoon, or...uh, a...an alligator.

With paintball markers it most often means firing your gun without paint or air. Or just air. Both ways its shooting without any paint. And dry firing is not bad at all for most markers.

But when it comes to firearms (real guns) dry firing is without a cartridge. You should never dryfire a real gun because it can break the firing pin.
