The liquid Teflon I have does not dry...it stays sticky. Usually one puts it on the threads, tighten them and wipe off the excess.

do like enos said but i would recomend about 2" of tape if you're having problems sealing. another thing to watch for if you thread the vert adaptor too far into the valve it makes the gap between the vert adaptor and power tube too small and won't fit in the gun. good luck

it could still be the threads that are leaking it's just coming out the power tube (path of least resistance) or this thread is a total whaste and you need to oil your valve

If the treads are good it is correct that the union doesn't need anything to seal. So maybe you are not screwing it in tight enough since it is a tapered pipe thread that is what is doing the sealing the sealant is mostly an added insurance. I thought of this because you said it was no trouble removing with red loctite on it. That suggested to me that it is not screwed in tight enough. (It should actually take some effort to put it in.) Also your valve may be leaking and it just looks like it is coming out of the juction because it is running along the inside of the power tube to the nearest opening.
I could fix it, if only I had a bigger hammer

Not all the time. Only about 99.9 percent of it.
