without the shroud you could put it just into the adapter, but you would never get it straight or in correctly and your balls would be swerving all over the place. the shrouds purpose is to keep the barrel strait hold it in there.

but yes it is possible but not at all practical.

yes i do it the shroud is a piece of s*** and it always gets in the way so yes you can.

You can play without the shroud, but if you play rough, you might damage the barrel. I dought that would happen. If you hate the plastic shroud, you could get a metal shroud, but you would put on extra weight.
