So, I've been wanting to Sell my AK-47 and Buy a Dangerous Power G3(or SLG UL cant Decide... Skillet, or someone, what would you buy?) and, I talked to a Cop today and apprently if I'm selling it privately i dont need to get any police officer involved, or a State Magistrate or anything, all I need to do is Take the money and give them the gun.... BUT, even though I talked to a Cop(A Lieutenant) I still don't think thats how it goes... but I might be a little... iffy though, but for sure I'm going to make Documentation and write the Serial number down and all that, so if any "Accident" happens, that I have no affilation with the firearm again, but... yeah... So... is that the case, just take money give gun? |

Go to a FFL and pay $20 to have a firearm transfer if you're worried.

From what I've noticed, we're pretty much the same as we've always been. A bad idea is a bad idea, even if you just entertain it, and we probably won't let you live it down. |

Shouldn't be too much red tape, have it transferred when it's sold, and be done, as long as it's semi-auto it's just another rifle.
Make sure to get a good price for it though; with the talk of reinstating the AWB, and all the gun control buz / paranoia out there, I imagine any kind of AK / AR style rifle is going to very valuable in coming months.

^Nice, I'll keep that in mind...
Well, I've cleaned it and kept it in Tip-top Shape, and added a Recoil Buffer to the Bolt, so even though it had a tiny kick, now it feels like a .22 mag rifle. Thank you Skillet, I was leaning G3, but with it not Having "cough"pspramping*sneeze* I was a little hesitant. |

I've done a lot of private trading, and I've yet to run into a problem for it. Take money, give gun...that's all my transactions have been, and I have never heard that it was illegal to do so, but it may completely depend on the state you're in.

Ozwarg, why exactly do you need PSP ramping?
I don't own real guns so I can't help on that front. |

As everyone else has said, take the money, give the gun. Done and dusted no problems to worry about.

PSP ramp has been lowered to 10 bps, anyway. Just learn how to shoot your gun and play in semi.

If you sell a gun, please use a firearm bill of sale...
You can find them all over the web for free. Just fill it out, and make a copy for you and the buyer to sign.

Before giving you the blanket "it's fine"... it depends on what state you live in as well. Call up your local atty general and ask, or look up your local laws. DO NOT go on the word of us internet folk...nor on the word of a local Cop! As much as we'd all like to think that cops know the law, they're human like you and me and can make mistakes/interpret things wrong. Be 100% certain of the requirements of FTF sales before proceding. And as you are probably already aware...FTF sale ONLY to someone who lives in your same state. You cannot do a FTF to a resident of another state.
If I were still living in NJ, or lived across the Potomac in MD or DC... no chance of selling an AK FTF. But in VA... FTF transaction is fine. Thus far I've bought 3 rifles, a shotgun and a handgun in FTF transactions. I've sold a rifle. No paperwork, no bills of sale. A flash of my 03FFL for two rifles, and mutual showing of CHPs for the others as "proof" that each of us were upstanding citizens. Before going through the hassle of finding a buyer and then finding a seller...go to various firearm forums (like AR15.com) and offer up your AK for a straight-up trade (or trade+cash). Might be an easier route to take. As a sidenote...bad time to go for a 308/7.62x51. Talk about an expensive rifle to feed!

Make sure that you do the exchange at a very public place say a mall food court or a church picnic. Also just to be kosher call the cops ahead of time and tell them Mexican Drug Lords are buying AK's from American Separatists Neo Nazis. That way your cover in all fronts.

if you meet them at a local gun shop the guys there can do an FFL transfer, they will do a background check and you will have a paper trail that you sold the firearm.
if not just have them sign something like a bill of sale and make a copy of their ID. |

I live in Wyoming. We dont have any "laws" that will stop this...
I swar to god, any of you guys have links to the mob... come to Wyoming, we have almost no laws except Federal, and State ones that prohibit like cow tipping and stealing horses... You can still get a death sentance out here for stealing a horse. BUT, I'm looking at buying an Azodian pump... like $150, shoot good from what I've seen and... they have th Hit Man mod. That or Upgrade my 05' Sniper Pump, probably just upgrade my pump... Edited by Ozwarg - 28 March 2009 at 12:30pm |
