    Posted: 31 August 2004 at 5:14pm
I currently have a normal old style threads tippmann 98 that is completely stock.
I was wondering what kind of upgrade I should install.
I am not professional paintball player.
I just play speedball on some weekends and maybe some woodsball.
I would like to spend less than $150 on these upgrades.

any suggestions?

your gonna want a new barrel, i'd say a lapco bigshot. you'll be very satisfied. i assume you use co2 and plan on sticking with it. so grab a DOP x-core expansion chamber.. and to install that you'll need a vertical adapter. get the Ben Tippman one.. its a bit easier to install.

so far that adds up to.. lapco bigshot - $50 / x-core - $20 / vertical adapter / $20

thats 90$. i would spend the rest on an electric loader. Halo TSA backman LED would be my choice for $54

all of these items are available at countypaintball.com

check it out

12 or 14 inch would be your best bet.. they perform pretty much the same. its just personal preference. and yes the bigshot is what you want.

Get a 12 or 14 inch smart pars tear drop, i get the impression that its a model 98 (with the fins) not 98 custom. So you can't get an rt w/o paying tippmann to mill out your gun. so there is really no need for an electric hopper. But if you want one get a 12v revvy, they are much lighter than the halo's for about the same price. Definitly a vertical adaptor, and ex chamber for consistency in you velocity. Thats really about it. IM me at drewguere with any questions

If you want a two peice barrel the smart parts all american is great in 14''. That will be about 100 bucks so you could get the vert adapt and ex chamber 2 for about 150, then move onto the hopper, a 12v revvy is good but evolution 2 is faster, and upgradeable, so you might like that better

The two peice all american is sooo much better than the bigshot, but the bigshot is cheaper, it depends on what else you want to do with the gun, If you think you will eventually upgrade to a 98 CUSTOM, than get the all american, if you think you will get a different gun altogether get the bigshot, to save a little money. But it's your choice

the thing is i really like the look witht the fins.
i would like to find somewhere that can mill out the side pannels to the specs of the 98customs so that i can have to look but i can also put in all the triggers and bolts and etriggers i want later

The two peice barrel starts off for the first 6 inches or so with a bore of like .685 or so, and widens out to about .689 or .691 or so, and it gives the ball a little more accuracy, plus its easier to clean. and the look pretty intimidating to!

You can send you model 98 to tippmann and they could, for a price, mill out so you can accept the rt. I don't think you can put a two finger trig on model 98s, they might be able to put in those hoes too, not sure. And I'm pretty sure that model 98s will accept the e bolt, because the have the same internals. But they are pretty pricey, almost 300 buck!

only get a 12V revvy if you want your loader to break.. its the same price as the Halo TSA LED so theres no reason for you to not get the halo. its more duable.. faster.. and just a better product altogether

so which one should i get?
i think you have both agreed on the xchamber and a vert adapter for it.
but what about barrel and hopper?

do i realy need a 12 inch barrel? i mean that plus the lenght of the 98 pluss the tank. my gun is going to be like 2 and a half feet long?!?!?

if you are worried about the gun being too long then you can go ahead and purchase a drop forward to tuck that bottle in below the marker.  However, that means you'll have to get a new hose and maybe fittings.  You make your own marker.  Take your preferences and put it all together.  Find out what you want it to do and check pbreview.com for upgrades to do what you want.  Then search the net and purchase them.  I do suggest do it a little at a time and enjoy each upgrade then add the next upgrade and watch the performance improve.  If you are still iffy on your upgrade selection, see if you a can get your hands on a friends setup and find out what you like and dislike about it and work from that as a reference point.
In my search for the meaning of life, I either lost something in the translation or I'm listening with too much of an accent.
