So has anyone actually kept track of how many A-5 vs 98 Custom threads there have been?

No, but it is a bunch.

Anyway, It all depends on what you want. I own an A5, and it does well for scenario. If you are in the woods, then I say A5. If you are going to be modding the marker, and playing speedball I would go with a 98C. To me the 98C is probally the the most reliable marker on the planet. It is not gonna get the rate of fire stock than the A5, but some people have reported some issues with the cyclone feed system.

This is strickly my opinion, and I am no expert. I did after all like my 68 Carbine better than the A5 and the 98.

And several people here will disagree with me. I tend to have that happen alot.

Don't just go on what other people say. Go and shoot both and you will know what one you want.

I have an A5. I'm at the field almost every weekend. I've put about 30 cases of paint of all kinds through it. It has never chopped a ball. It never goes down. As mentioned before, you do not have to buy an expensive hopper for it. It comes with the cyclone. You don't have to worry about your hopper falling off. I have an EGRIP on mine and a Crossfire Nitro. I do have both a FLATLINE and a 32 Degrees Whisper barrel. I like both barrels and switch back and to just because I like to. The 98 has an EBOLT which is similar to the EGRIP, but the EGRIP is almost $200.00 less. In all fairness, many of the guys who have a 98 express that they are looking to go to the A5.

The A-5 is better. Don't try to argue the fact that the A-5 can outproform the 98 Custom. I'm not saying that all 98 customs are trash but the A-5 has the advantage of the cyclone. Plus the Egrip is cheaper than the ebolt, the a5 looks better IMO. The A-5 is easy to maintain, the quick strip is a nice feature and you can upgrade it as much as the 98 custom. GO WITH THE A-5!!!

I had my A-5 for years it never really let me down. I've also heard stories about that damned front site spring or whatever it is on the 98c that everyone hates. Definatly get a J&J Ceramic with the A-5.

A-5, for a couple reasons, which I am too lazy to list, but I will say this:

the e-bolt(for M98c) is capped at 16 bps, and that's all the faster the A-5 will go anyway, so I would have to go with A-5, more reliable, cooler, easier to maintain/clean/upgrade and you don't have to break it down into its basic elements just to change a freakin' spring.

just my reasons

98 Custom is not only good for speedball. seeing as it is very reliable makes it the superior in woods ball.  I once dropped my m98 oooops. It landed in the water.  I picked it up let the water drain out for about two minutes.  crossed my fingers and pulled the triger it fired with ease.  The 98 is able to take grueling punishment.  Go 98c!!!!!!!!!!!

I got this question in a PM recently and typed up a long, detailed response to it which I'll now copy here:

Well, in my opinion, the A5 is a much better choice if you plan to upgrade heavily and you play both speedball and woodsball/scenario regularly. I play everything so I need a gun that can do everything which is why the 98c and A5 fit me so well. The simplest way to describe the differences between the two guns would be by saying that the A5 is just an improved 98c. You take the good things about the 98c, add a few new things, and fix the problems with the 98c and then you sell it under the name A5 for about $100 more. Both guns are great but the 98c had a few things about it that were fairly annoying at times. The most annoying thing for me was the fact that I had to take the whole gun apart just to change something like a trigger spring. The A5 can be quick-stripped in seconds and you would only have to remove the grip and trigger assembly to change a trigger spring. It let's you get to the exact part that you need without having to take the whole darn thing apart which saves a lot of time.

Then there are the additional features like the cyclone. On the 98 you could always buy a hopper like any other gun if you wanted to up your ROF but with the A5 you don't have to worry about it. You may not have much flexibility in terms of which feed system you use but the cyclone will keep up with you just fine and doesn't require batteries which is always helpful. Another nice additional feature are removable barrel threads. Adapters can get lost, add extra length, or even cause a loss in accuracy but the A5 lets you completely change your threading so none of that happens. This gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of barrels since some companies only thread their products for certain guns and adapters can cause problems.

Another problem on the 98 was that the cocking slot was wide open and let all kinds of crap fly into the gun and dirty things up. The A5 corrects this design flaw by sealing that up. Another related issue was hitting the cocking knob with your finger by accident while firing which hurts and uncocks the gun. This was fixed by moving the knob all the way up front. The foregrip was also something that turned some people away from the 98 because they didn't like it that far out. Well, the A5 allows you to adjust that distance so you can slide it closer or farther depending on your preference. You could also completely remove it if you wanted to. The internals stayed basically the same except for some minor changes.

So, despite being slightly heavier (less than a pound, very little) and a little wider due to the cyclone, the A5 has improved a lot on the design of the 98c. At first there weren't many upgrades for it but that has changed and you can now do just about anything to an A5 that you could to a 98c and, in most cases, it's easier on the A5. I do love my 98c and I'm a little biased since it was my first gun but the A5 is far superior and all the facts prove it.

I've made other posts similar to this but I've given even more reasons why the A5 is better. If you want to see those I'm sure they'd turn up in a search, I've posted dozens of times in these threads.

getting dropped in water reeally isnt that bad for a mech tippy....

as long as the water is cleaned out of the hose and valve there really isnt anything that could go wrong with some water. when you get into electronics and such, then your screwed.

That guy must not have known too much then because the A-5's cyclone is topped at 17bps. The E-grip is 15bps. But the 98c can ge the E-bolt and go at 13bps, then get a halo b,then get the new WAS board coming out on Feb 1st or March 1st. I forgot but the 98 custom is better.

What? A halo is overkill for a 98c, you'll never need that kind of a hopper on a 98. The most you would need is probably an egg II if you had an ebolt or RT, otherwise a revvy is fine. The halo is only needed on guns shooting closer to 20 bps. Also, isn't the WAS board for intimidators?

I would pick the A-5. The cyclone avoids chopping and you wont have to put any expenses into another hopper like a Halo which is at least 70 bucks. Go with the A-5 i have one and it hasnt let me down.
