new tippmann marker

That would change tippmann.  They are commonly known for there strong and pneumatic markers. Making an electric marker for speedball would be a major change, but it's always possible.  People might not accept it because quite frankly, people don't like change. 
Decent idea though.  Maybe they will do it someday.

Last I heard Tippmann was working on a new rental gun, similar to the Pro/Carb. So any dreams of a speedball gun have been put on hold.

From a business standpoint, it would be a good diea- very little, if anything, is in the Ion's class performance and price wise. With their respected name, Tippmann could make an inexpensive spedball amrker with impressive performance, and immediately capture some market share. That being said, Tippmann should stick to what it does best; highly customizeable rec and woodsball markers with a high degree of reliability.

Actually from a business standpoint, it WOULDN'T be a good idea.

The speedball marker market is FLOODED! There are so many guns out there, many of which are now so cheap it's actually quite amazing considering the usual mentality of "if it ain't got at least 3 zero's after it I ain't buyin it."

And guess what? Speedball makes up.... well Tournament paintball makes up only about 3% of the ENTIRE population of paintball players. Speedball can be categorized with also recball. As in the weekend warriors who go out, play speedball on the field, and go home... no actual tournament. However those numbers are dwarfed by the numbers of woodsball players.

The MAJORITY of paintball plays in the woods. Plain and simple. Just because the magazines show only speedball doesn't mean anything, it is just a false fase to put on for public display and that's about it. Much nicer to show inflated bunkers, shiny faded DM5, and matching jerseys to the public than "people training to be terrorists / practicing for war."


So since most of paintball players are the camo type, since most of paintball are woodsball types, since most of paintball is this crowd. Guess where Tippmann should continue to design and market their equipment?

Market diversification is almost always a good business practice. Tippmann would stand to lose nothing by introducing a new marker in the same category as the Ion. Indeed, it would attract players to the tippmann name that generally were outside the Tippmann demographic, and would also allow another testbed for new technology and production methods. The big question is: could they turn a profit off of it? The answer is yes, certainly.

One needs only to look at how well the Ion has done to see that there is a market for this kind of marker. While I don't personally feel Tippmann needs to tap this market, there would be nothing wrong with that decision if they made it. Of course, they'd be encroaching on Spyder territory, but with Tippmann's known reliability and performance, they could do fairly well there.

There are plenty of markers in the Ion's class... Wrath, b2k4/ProMaster, etc. Tippmann would waste a lot of money on R&D to be able to compete in all aspects, while probably not gaining much profit.

I hate to break it to a lot of people, but from many speedballers Tippmann's name isn't that respected. Not many people would spend serious dough on a marker that makes guns for beginners.

I do agree that Tippmann should stay making durable blow-backs.
