Gentlemen Someone mentioned to me that alot of my CA tanks are waaay over the date stamped on the bottles. What does this datestamp mean and does it have anything to do with the safety of my bottles? thx Scott |

The date stamped is when you should use the tank before. It is like an expiration date. After the date, you have to get them rehydroed for saftey. This costs about $30.

Most Dive shops can Hydro. all you have to do is take your tank up to the shop, and they will do it for you.

well if you have dates stamped, then that means you have steel tanks.
All steel tanks over 2 inches in diameter need to be hydrotested every
5 years. This includes CO2 tanks.

nothing.
Most shops dont check the hydros of CO2 anyway. Its cheaper most of the time to just buy a new CO2 tank than to ship them out to get hydroed. |

Yeah, for Co2, it's probably cheaper to just buy a new tank. Rehydro-ing is simply a way to test the structural integrity of a CA tank, to make sure that the tank body can still handle the pressure of normal useage. All tanks must go through this, or field owners and fill stations may not fill them for you-if they care about safety and thier customers, that is. jj |

Yeah, nothing other than the safety risk of having a tank fail right next to your face. Think about a tank full of CO2 having a major leak. If you were lucky, you wouldn't get any freezing cold CO2 into your eyes, but frostbite anywhere on your neck would pretty much suck. |

they can get weaker but rust can form inside the tank and we all know what rust doese.if you are doughting your tank get a new one. You can take it to your local dive shop they will treat it like a scuba tank and pressure test it and give it a vissual test to see if any defects are there. If you dont wanna do that empty out the air and toss it in the trash $20.00 will get you a new 20oz

In a way. When the tank is hydrostatically tested they remove the valve and pressurize the tank well above the intended operating pressure. They carefully check the tank diameter before pressurizing and then again when it is taken to the specified over-pressure level. The change in tank diameter tells them how much life remains. As the tanks get filled time and time again the expansion and contraction eventually causes loss of elasticity. If a tank continues to be used beyond its measured elastic limits it may eventually blow up. The effect is like bending a steel wire back and forth. It eventually snaps in two. Edited by Bruce A.
