Using a stock barrel for a 98c would wrapping electrical tape around the air ports in the middle of the barrel save any gas?
I tried doing that today but since my co2 tank was almost empty I couldn't really tell. Edited by aGUYnamedLARRY |

all the gas that would have gone out the porting still leaves the tank, thus goes bye bye and covering the porting makes barrels louder

you do actually get a bit more velosity when covering the ports in the middle of the barrel, so to lower the velosity you would screw in a stock adjuster theortically saving a small amount of CO2.
Using a rear velosity adjuster you would save some more but probably not enough to be very noticable. |

But I read somewhere that a ball picks up to its full speed in the
first 8 inches of a barrel. Seeing as a stock barrel is only 8 inches
long, wouldn't it be letting out quite a bit of gas from the middle
ports?
It didn't make a difference in sound, in fact I thought it was more quiet then before. But it's probably just me. And another thing, it isn't JUST a 98c stock barrel. I've done some crazy stuff to it. It has a 4 inch shot grouping at 65 feet and no curve long distance. Stays straight the whole way. I can probably get pics of it onto my computer but someone else will have to host it for me. I took a metal file and did a crappy job rifleing it and it works REALLY well. |

There is no use in taping them off if you are trying to save Co2. The ammount you will save will be negligible. Possibly enough to shoot 1 or 2 extra balls, if even that. But if you want to gain velocity, then that is a different ball game.
The gun (98 Custom) releases a certain amount of Co2 for each pull of the trigger. This ammount may be higher or lower depending on whether the Co2 is coming straight from the tank, or is expanding in a remote or expansion chamber before being released. We'll just assume that it is all being expanded before being fired. The gun will always release the same amount, or very close to the same amount of Co2 for each shot, thus there is no way to alter it significantly by just altering the barrel. You would need to mess with the internals to do this. Lighter bolt spring.. RVA.. those kinds of things. |

All taping the stock barrel porting does is make it go further at the expense of accuracy in my experience. |

Well, like I said, I filed the inside of my barrel as
best I could like real rifling (works great btw) in the
process of doing this "rifling" I made the inside of the barrel
slightly bigger, only slightly though.
I noticed no difference in accuracy by closing up the barrel portings. |

rifling won't work on a paintball the way it works on an actual
bullet.....the rifling in a barrel actually grips the bullet and forces
it to spiral....that's why if you look at a recovered bullet you'll
notice gouges in the bullet.....that's how they can match up the bullet
to a particular gun. All it's going to do on a paintball is bust
it. Also I'd like to know how you rifled a barrel with a file....it
takes special equipment to do that kind of work....all you'll do with a
file is scratch it to hell.

There, rifled paint ball barrels. They also have a video if you'd like to see it. Well, I said it was a crappy job rifling, didn't I? All I did was stick the metal file in at an angle halfway down the barrel so all the scratches go in the same direction. It's not huge deep grooves like in a real rifle, The biggest groove I have is less then an 8th of an inch deep, it's not gouging the side of the ball at all. On the inside of my barrel, there are parts of it that are un touched by my file, leaving smooth spots for the ball to run on. The part that I filed down are just past the finishing on the barrel. So I have some rouch spots that the ball follows, thus putting a slight spin on the ball. You can shoot them up into the air on a clear day and see them spin, it's pretty cool looking. Out of the 500 or so shots I've fired from it, I have not broken a single ball. And for all those people who say "a paintball is not perfectly round, when you spin it it'll curve" well, I have not noticed a curve in my shot, at close range or at a distance. The balls don't curve, and even if they did, they'd curve the same direction everytime. So you could simply adjust to how much it curves and there ya go. Cause it would curve to the same place everytime. Hey, I said I can try and take pics, I won't be able to have a good shot of the inside of the barrel but I'll be able to prove the accuracy of it. |

Your right about the 8 inch thing. But, it should make it louder. That is why the A-5 flatty sounds like you just blew something up. |

in theory yes but i dont think on a stock 98 barrel it would make much difference but a barrel with alot of porting it could help a little

Well I'll experiment with it a little, see if I like it better
with or without the tape. I know I'm keeping the barrel
though, it's FREAKIN AWESOME!!!
