One Night With the King.
We watched this last night in my Bible As Literature class, and as far as biblical romances go, it wasn't half bad. A bit cheesy at points, but not bad overall. The story is from the Book of Esther. Esther was a young Jewish orphan who became the wife of King Xerxes. (Yes, the Xerxes from 300, although he's not nine feet tall and pierced with 50 pounds of jewelry in this film.) The background of the story from Biblical text follows some time after the first king, Saul, fell from God's favor when he failed to kill every Amalekite, their livestock, men, women, and children alike. Utter genocide. The Queen bore a son and from this we have the story of Esther. The last vestiges of the Amalekites wish to return the favor (genocide) to the Jews and when it comes down to it it is Esther that must sway Xerxes. So, if you're looking for a Biblical romance (and an excuse to follow up the story with a viewing of 300), you could do worse. |
