I bought a 98 Custom/12 ounce CO2 off of a friend pretty cheap. I know that he had barely used the gun. He might have played 5 or less actual games with the gun, because I played those few games with him. For about a year now since, it's been sitting in his closet because he lost interest. I filled the CO2, replaced the o-ring, and attached it, but the gun still won't fire. It's somehow not getting any pressure at all. When you attach the CO2, you hear the "ssssss" sound, then it gets quiet like normal. All that happens when I pull the trigger is it just "uncocks" (whatever the proper term for that is..) and I have to cock it back again. I know this is a question with a wide array of possible answers, but a Tippmann is a pretty sturdy gun and I can't see it having that big of a problem, since this gun is in pretty good overall shape and wasn't used much. Would anyone have a clue as to what the deal is here? Another bit of info.. it's got a flatline added to it if that helps answer anything at all.

I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but I would rule out the tank, try another one. the 98 seems to me to be a simple design which I think is why it is dependable & reliable. So I would try a different tank first

Chances are, the marker was either never taken apart and cleaned, or if it was, it was put back together incorrectly. Take it apart, compare everything with the exploded view of the parts (available at tippmannparts.com) Make sure the ball-detent isn't in backwards. $10 says that's the issue.

I opened it up, checked out the parts (tons of gunk built up in there from cheap paintballs), wiped the easy to reach places out, and everything seemed to be assembled fine according to the schematic.. Not sure what could possibly be the problem. I still haven't tried a different CO2 tank but I will when I get a chance, although the one I'm using appears to be fine. sounds kindof like the valve isn't responding when hit by the hammer. so the hammer may not be hitting the pin hard enough (hard to have happen but check the spring for cuts/ damage.) or it could be that the o ring for the hammer is stopping it from entering the back of the powertube.. could be a bent valvepin. or something could be lodged in the valve itself.

Problem solved! ... as far as I can tell.
I took everything out, wiped it, used an air compressor to blow air through parts to clean out the built up goo in there, put it all back together and it fires perfectly. I should still try to fire actual paintballs to be sure it's working fine.. I sold my gun a while back and don't have paintballs laying around anymore. Thanks for the help |

First off, start your own thread instead of piggy-backing on someone else's, it will get you more answers.
If your marker doesn't let you pull the charging handle back, chances are you've either pinched something in the clam-shell, or mis-aligned the linkage rod, bolt, and hammer. The only other thing I can think of is that the ball detent is in backward and may be catching on the bolt. The best thing you can do is go to www.tippmannparts.com and download the 98c schematic. The exploded view of the marker will show you how everything should go back together. Just take your time, follow the pictures, and you should be fine. |

^ lol there should be a sticky that goes through the troubleshooting of a tippmann. common causes for misfires etc etc. so that we dont get 50 people asking the same thing
