I need help fromthe guys/gals here interested in freaky assed bugs.
I personally think this is a radioactive mutant spider, and I assume by now it has killed and devoured my parents. And it is probably now the size of a pony. However last night at my parents we found this spider. It's about 3" long, with the body roughly one inch. The webit had was about 5' in diameter, and it was a normal flat web, build amongst 3 dimentional anchor webs. seriously, it looked big enough to trap small birds. :) SO, anyone know what it is?

Dude, you live in Africa.

... By the way, Kayback's spider looks like it's probably just some sort of orb-weaver, which are pretty harmless. Don't take my word for it, though. I'm no spider expert. Edited by Brian Fellows - 23 March 2008 at 8:59am |

It appears to be a nephilengys.
However, their range doesn't extend into S. Africa as much (almost all the way around it, but very little inside the borders. So I could be off by a species or two. Same genus would be my guess. |

Most spiders are beneficial. They keep the populations of pest insects and more dangerous spiders in check. |

I can identify that easily, its a South African GTFO-AND-DON"T-
TOUCH-IT-WITH-A-STICK-STOP-GETTING-CLOSE-ENOUGH-TO- TAKE-ITS-PICTURE-USE-YOUR-GLOCK-AND-BLOW-ITS-NASTY- SAC-ASS-RIGHT-OFF-OF-THAT-TREE. That is NASTY, spiders freak me out, they are the ultimate hunter-killers and that one gross's me right out. I live in the fart sac of planet earth, we have nothing but mud and mosquitoes for 4 months (sometimes called summer), and winter the other 6 months, BUT we have nothing even close to what some people here post. No poisonous snakes, no cockroaches, no lizards, no slimy foot-long slugs, no pictures I have to post and ask "what is this??!11" |

The top of the wikipage says: "Know as a hermit spider in South Africa." So I'm guessing it's semi-common. And I'm impressed by your wide-base of knowledge, I guess chewp was right about the encyclopedias. |
