Ok today my friend gave me his old snowboard with bindings. He told me i would need to get some boots. I have some crappy cheapo walmart special sugi winter boots that kinda look like snowboard boots. Now I know that snowboard boots are made specificly for snowboarding and you are supposed to have them. My question is do i really need to buy snowboarding boots when i have these boots that are kinda like snowboarding boots? I used them today at a hill at my cousins house and they seemed to work. They fit in the bindings fine and are stiff around the ankles. I used them all day today and my feet aren't sore or anything so does that mean they should be good?

Well, as long as they fit the bindings and you know they aren't going to slip out on you, you should be alright. The most important thing is to make sure they are comfortable. If you like the feel of them, youre golden. I would recomend buying a good pair in the near future if you plan on hitting up a mountain. Real boots will give you the suppost u need for making quick turns and going down those steep inclines. You can find some good deals online - i bought my boots here:
http://www.evogear.com/shop/snowboard/boots/s_price-asc.aspx Somewhere in there there's a sizing chart too. If you have the time, going to a store that sells them and trying a few on to make sure you know exactly what size to get might be a good idea. Then u can go order some. Thats what i did. Anyways, i hope that helps |

I plan on getting some eventually but if i can hold off for awhile and spend my money on something else it would be nice. They look pretty much just like snowboarding boots except they are not really as angled in/down as snowboarding boots.

Well, like i said, for the most part you should be all set. And if you feel totally comfortable in them and u feel they are supporting you enough, than you can probably get by with them.

Truthyfully, I would buy new boots. I'm kinda of like a worry wart when it comes to saftey with sports. I have broken my ankles like four times, so I always go with what has the best support.
On that note, I can't snowboard worth a damn. Skiing is where it is at for me. Holla at tallen

I would get the real boots. You can pick up a cheap pair on sale for 80-100 bucks. They are stiffer, offer more support, and will fit correctly into the bindings. It may seems like yours are ok, but normal boots just aren't designed with the ankle support and form to be used in a real snowboard setup. Your running a pretty big risk of coming out/loose, or twisting/snapping an ankle. It's not really worth it in my opinion. You don't need to spend an arm and a leg, just get the right equipment for the sport.

Get the real boots. They're made for a reason. I'm in the middle of my
second broken ankle, they're not fun. |

I find boots and outerwear are the most important peices, without comfort and warmth your chances of having the best time you could arent that high. And snowboardings all about having fun. To me its boot, outerwear/gloves, board, bindings. Most to least important. But if your able to hold out for this season pick some up at the end while its on sale. Good luck, dont break your ankle! |

There are many many reasons proper snowboard boots are important, however they are not 100% required if it's just not in the cards for you. My first snowboard was 3rd hand with a crack in the edge, rotten core (super flexy) and metal bindings with low-backs. For snowboard boots I wore normal winter boots, not even thick supportive ones, and I did fine. HOWEVER, again if you CAN get snowboard boots I would recommend it, you will have more control over your board, better ankle protection, less slipping, etc.
The call is essentially yours. |

They look like winter boots trying to be snowboard boots, although the fact it has that design of slip in/ out liner makes me think they could be. They look fat as hell around the calf though.

well if you know what the support is supposed to feel like and you feel confident riding in them all day, i would go for it...i'd also look into investing in a real pair though
