Im considering buying a 98 Custom Pro and all of my friend's paintball stuff but i was wondering if there was a way to cut down on some of the noise. We were shooting it the other night and i noticed it was fairly loud and was wondering if there was a fairly easy and inexpensive way to make it more stealthy

longer barrels usually cut down on the report of the gun, but no more than 16 inches for performance reasons.
other than that, everything else is expensive. ie: Low Pressure Kit |

There is very little you can do to muffle a Tippmann marker. Short of encasing the entire marker with about 12" of foam, you're best bet is a barrel with plenty of porting. If the LPK does quiet down the marker, it is an expensive way of doing it.

its just going to be a loud gun....but remarkably reliable. You can try a stiffi barrel it does help with noise going down range. But if you change the way you play you may be able to compensate for noise.

I have the low pressure kit and a pile of barrels. Though it is quieter than a stock
98, it is still loud. I made a paintball silencer that works well, but from what I've heard is illegal in the US. Event silenced, there is a noticable 'clink' sound from the hammer hitting the valve stem. Loud and proud |

If it's too loud, you're too old. |

I enjoy loud markers... they make other players curious... just shoot a couple of times to let them know where you are or just make them paranoid... let the games beggin

That it is. Theres "silencer" plans for paintball guns, but ANY silencer is illegal. And since Tippmann as a company has handed down a strict no illegal discussion rule, we cant give any details on this. But Ill tell you right now, most of them dont work worth a crap. |

Buy a Palmer's Stabilizer. You can then set you gun to around 650 psi which is much quieter than a straight CO2 tank on a hot day. It is also quieter that the 850 psi an HPA tank puts out. I said 650 psi because that is what my custom works at. After getting a Stabilizer, you can turn the stock velocity adjuster out so it doesn't block any air anymore, and then use the stabilizer as you velocity adjustment by raising or lowering the air pressure a little. This is the most effective way to reduse sound. Ported barrels just change the sounds direction so it sounds like it's quieter. With a stabilizer, you redused the pressure, so it IS actually quieter.
However, keep in mind a Tippmann is just a loud gun. It's because of the blow-back design. You'll never get a Tippmann to be as quiet as an Automag, Mini, Ion, or TM7 since those gun run off around 200 psi. On a side note, since it was brought up... There was a "drive-by" paintball shooting in Longmont, CO around a year ago. The victim was hit in the eye and lost 100% of her sight in that eye. The 18-year-old who pulled the trigger got 5 years in prison. IMHO, it should have been 10 years or more because she lost half of her vision. Edited by motopsycho650 - 29 May 2009 at 8:04am |

please do not encourage idiots from doing really harmful stupid things. This sport already does not have the best reputation with the masses and the more negative PR we get the more likely laws could get passed to make it harder for us to play.
