So I mentioned in one of the other dozen gun threads that I am looking for a good rifle. I've found a few choices within my budget and would like some opinions.
Primarily I'm looking for something to have fun at the range with. However, I also want something that has a decent amount of power (not a 22lr). I'll list the main 4 rifles I'm looking at, in order from lowest cost to highest. Keep in mind with the lower priced guns I can afford to add on to the gun, with the higher I probably won't be able to. First up is a Century International AK-47. 7.62x39mm, the most expensive of the rounds that I've seen. Not really my taste but they are fun to shoot. Next is the Beretta CX9. Found a used one for a great price. 9mm round, so far the cheapest round of the bunch. The downside is that because I'm not 21, I can't buy rounds for the gun and would have to have someone do it for me. My main concern with this gun is that the stock will be too short. I've held one but never fired it. The predecessor to the H&K 91, made by CETME, used but with new barrel. Chambered in .308. Never shot one of these before but still holding it as a contender. My only concern is that it is a little long for my taste. And last but not least is the CMMG bargain bin AR-15s that everyone here is buying. I'm personally leaning towards the AR-15. Overall it seems to match my needs the best. Also, side note. When I went to the gun shop today, they had 3 Barret .50 BMG rifles on display. Great pieces of engineering, too bad the price tag was $10,000. |

Check out the new Mini-14. Reports are that the accuracy issues have been fixed.

Don't get the CETME, they're rebuilt kits by century arms. The newer ones are supposed to be OK, but some of the early ones were problematic. Also, they tear up brass and may not cycle a civilian-spec .308 round since the case walls are thinner than 7.62X51, the fluted chamber does not like that. The AK would be cheaper to shoot. If you want a 7.62 rifle, get an FAL or a PTR-91(better G-3 clone). Go w/ the AR or CX9. I think the CX comes with stock-spacers, and you can stick w/one type of ammo and/or mag if you get a pistol at a laer date. Fire one if you get a chance, I'v heard some good reviews and think it would be my 9mm carbine of choice. I actually suggested my aunt get one for a HD weapon instead of a little .32ACP, but she thinks the .32 is "cute". . Women....
My 9mm carbine experience is limited to a semi-auto UZI, which had almost zero recoil(broke some clays with it with time to fire 3-4 controlled shots). The CX looks like a more user-friendly carbine. Edited by rednekk98 - 23 March 2010 at 11:55pm |

I'd go with the AR, but thats personal preference. I want a CX9 myself, but i havent done too much research on them, apart from shooting a buddy of mine's.
And i see barret .50's going for 8 grand all day in NY. Id buy one if i had that disposable to me. Theyre awesome. |

I agree with staying away from the CETMEs There's a reason H&K has continued to improve the design, and Century has a bad rep for builds.
If you want to go AK, I highly suggest an AK-74. Centerfire Systems has Bulgarian -74's for $350 with free shipping right now. And 5.45x39 is by far the cheapest rifle ammo you can buy right now. This is because the Russian military have pretty much fully converted to 5.45 for their standard intermediate round, so there's plenty of manufacturers making them. Furthermore, it is a fantastic defensive round given that it produces a slightly larger cavity much earlier upon entry than standard 7.62x39 does. I really like my Bargain Bin M4gery from CMMG, and it really doesn't need much other than a good rear sight to make it a great rifle. |

Your welcome, just realize that you're not going to find 5.45x39 at the local "Dick's" or whatever you have for a sporting goods store where you are. You'll usually find it at gun stores, or you can order it dirt-cheap from online. |

Yea I figured so much about the ammo. Unfortunately I have to be 21 to order from that site (and I'm not) so I'll have to find someone to buy for me. :/ |

Only thing with the AR is that cleaning it is going to be a pain.

So, are you going with the AK74 clone then?
Just about everyone else has already said what I would have said. Avoid the CETME... 308 is way too expensive, and the CETME is really harsh on brass. I would've neglected to mention the AK74 type... but it is a good option and kudos to Tallen for mentioning it as an alternative to the AK47 types. 7.62x39 ammo is coming down in price... but 5.45x39 is pretty darn cheap still. As stated... your best bet will be to buy by the case (or tin). Your not likely to find it sold locally, and if you do, it'll probably cost you double. The 5.45x39, when bought in bulk... will be the least expensive, per round. I don't own an AK type... but I do have several ARs. And I recently purchased several stripped lowers... so I'll be putting together a few more. The CMMG bargain-bins are hard to beat, for a complete setup. As Tallen stated, you will need a rear sight... but there are inexpensive options, like the Magpul MBUS, etc. Doublestar ARs can also be had for about the same cost. 223 ammo is plentiful again, even locally. And the price has stabilized.
It won't apply if you buy the AK... but if you go CX9 or AR... save your brass (assuming it's boxer primed). Even if you don't plan on reloading... save it, just in case you do in the future... or it can be sold, and you can use the proceeds towards more ammo. (or if you really want, you can just give it to me) ![]() Edited by ShortyBP - 24 March 2010 at 9:32pm |
