So as some of you may know, I'm moving out of the mid-west and moving to the east coast post graduation.  I plan on moving in with my girlfriend of 3 years, whose been living in Boston for 4 years.  I am graduating from a relatively small state university with a degree in IT Management, and will no longer be hired by the state of Wisconsin (I think that's a good thing...right?).

The fact that I have about 2 months to get interviewed & hired scares the living crap out of me.  I have applied for 18 jobs thus far, my qualifications range from overqualified, perfectly qualified, to under qualified for these 18 jobs.  I've now hit the point where I will start applying for 2 jobs a day if that is what it takes.

My question is, oh great Tippmann Forum T&O; how do I get a job post graduation? Especially when moving to a place where I know only 2 people? Whatever I am doing, it is not working...

MIT needs tech support guys. And before you say anything about being over-qualified for tech support..... EVERYONE starts out in tech support/call desk jobs regardless of their education.

I for sure already applied at MIT 1 month ago haha.  I suppose I have 1 advantage though, about 3 years of tech support at a university.

if you don't go as far as Boston, my Albany based IT company is letting someone go soon and will have to fill the position.

Keep applying, don't give up. If you're remotely qualified for an open position, you have a chance of picking it up.

This.  When I graduated I flooded the market with my resumes.  I had over 100 out there and only heard from a handful of them.

Yes, we all know that the recession that started well before Obama was in the executive was his fault.

I'm paranoid at this point about college. I transfer to UT in a few months, and I keep thinking things like "What if my grades are too low for law school" and if that's the case "will a bachelor's in business get me anywhere?" I'm also torn between pursuing law, an MBA, or the joint degree. And part of me just wants to quit altogether and become a cop whilst finishing my bachelor's, and then decide if I want to do anything further afterwards.

TL;DR-torn between ambition, realism, patience, and lack of experience in the job market. I feel your pain.

Ambition is a struggle, but a satisfying one at least.

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly.

You know, I always feel guilty when people talk about finding work. I got hired for my first job when I returned to a summer job of working custodial at a school. They hired me for IT to work in house alongside an outside consultant- the same consultant who hired me when the school cut me loose.

I haven't looked at my resume since I was in college, and have never been on an interview. Confused I've got a feeling that when the time comes that I'll have to, I'll be woefully unprepared.

Good luck. And we're still looking for a helpdesk person.

I'll keep the helpdesk position in mind, can I work remotely from Boston? Wink
You certainly are lucky though; I must say I'm a bit jealous, I absolutely despise the interview process.  I personally interviewed and hired people myself, so I feel like I have an idea what employers are looking for (except when I ask people if they could be any shape, what they would they be and why..), but the process still drives me crazy.

I didn't even apply or interview for the position I got.  I did however apply and interview for an identical position about a month before the one I got opened up.

That's actually not outside the realm of possibility, unless the boss wants someone to handle in-house inventory during help-desk down time. We had a staff meeting yesterday and talked about a help desk person that we need to filter some of the more low end problems that clients call in with. So that those of us in the field don't have to drop big jobs to handle them.
