I finally got my fall assignment.

I'll be teaching two lab sections of MMC 2100 - Writing for Mass Communication. It apparently is everything from writing for news to writing press releases and advertising copy. It's a general knowledge course.

So I'll be joining the ranks of Dune and other teachers on the forum.

Also, I'm now a little terrified. I'm sure that once looking at me the students will be just as terrified.

Welcome to Instruction 101. Now remmember back when it was your goal to get over on the professor, expect the same.

First impression drives the remainder of the class. Your hair and beard will immeidately 'type cast' you, contrary to what you may believe. Dealing with late teenagers and early 20 types, the attention span will be limited, non exsistant if a friday afternoon class, and the distractions of cells and texts will abound. Regardless of school policy.

Lecturing at UNL Military Sciences Building once or twice per semester is an adventure to say the least. I just imagine my 'round brown' on my head and go into Drill Segeant Instructor Mode, seems to work well with the ROTC crowd.

Good Luck....and the frustration will start on first paper grading as you try to decifer the Text coded new English. Get a real good plagerism detection program, and then deal with the why did I get B arguements from people you know should have actually got a C, but you were feeling gratious that day.

Establish your control of the class first and foremost. Find out who is the biggest bad ass in the class and take that person down in front of the class.

or try this,
relax and go with it, keep them interested in what you are teaching them, make it so everyone at every level can understand and move with the class.  It works for me in Software and Applications training.  I train engineers to idiots (yes, idiots) and been using this technique for the past 12 years (KISS...Keep It Simple and Stupid).

I like that this instruction is the same advise given to those going to Federal prison.

I've worked with both students and prisoners, and sometimes they are all too similar.
If you have any questions Whale I'd be glad to help. If you're wondering about introduction day then it's all about first impressions. Too soft and your students walk out of there and show up only for the final. Too hard, and you'll be pulling teeth for student participation. Take each unit you plan on doing in the syllabus and break them down. Treat each one separately, with separate activities, lecture styles, cooperative learning possibilities, and assessments. Students need structure, regardless of what they say. However, too much structure and you'll lose them.

just walk in and kick over a podium, or flip a desk or table. thats what my high school history teacher would do to his freshmen classes on the first day. every one did take him seriously.

As long as you remember what it was like on the other side of the desk, you'll be fine.

Make it clear to them what the objectives of the class are, how it will help them where it really counts (getting work down the road), and the challenges they'll face if they don't put the effort in.

Show yourself to be willing to help any student who, in good faith, is looking to improve themselves. Make it equally understood that you won't babysit or chase students who don't put in the work.

Make them realize they will get every mark they earn, and will have to earn every mark they get.

Don't worry about the ones who text, facebook, or what have you. Some will get by just fine, others will do poorly. It's on them when they do. Teach to the ones who reciprocate the attention and effort.

And have fun with it. Instructing can be highly rewarding. You'll make a few differences in some academic careers.

Yup, he actually said that.

I say follow this intro:

Go buy a large black dildo.

On the first day, walk into the class and slam the large phallus down on your desk in a very matter-of-factly fashion. Turn to the class and address them in these very words:

"My name is Jeffrey Riley, I am a published journalist and I have been described as a one man wolf pack...

... Yes, I have a beard, and yes I am aware I possess a bearish appearance.

.... I will be your professor this semester; those of you paying attention may have noted the black dildo. It is here to represent my one request: Don't make a d*** out of me or my class room, and I won't make a d*** out of you and your academic careers"

Then open the class to a short get to know you question/answer; later junctioning into explanation and break down of the syllabus.

Things I've got from this thread:

1) Treat students with respect, and treat them like I liked to be treated as a student.

2) Show authority and firmness in decisions as not to have the hoard go out of control, but also be understanding when the situation calls for it.

3) Be on the lookout for people trying to pull a fast one at all times.

4) Drilldo.

5) Skinhat.
