My wife and I are considering attempting a change to our annual vacation. The words "RV" came out of my wifes mouth and I ddint hear the rest as I scrambled off to check where the closest place was that I could rent one was and how far we could get in a couple of days. Due to my ignorance of geography and distances, I mistakingly had grand plans of taking a National Lampoonish Vacation and driving to see the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park etc, until I realized that I was looking at at least a 27hr+ drive. Take into account 3 kids all together in a confined space and I quickly realized that these destinations are out since we will most likely only have 5-7 days, and I don't want to spend 4 of them driving to and from our destination. So great forum, any ideas? I live in NW Ohio, near Lima, I would like to go somewhere within a 10-12 hour drive, and that is RV friendly. I am willing to drive for a day, stay somewhere for a couple, drive again etc, but I do not want to spend more than 3 days driving. Outdoor activiities are a plus, I.e. mild hiking, canoeing, swimming etc. Kids will be 7 1/2 and 14, and theyre girls. Scenery is a big ++++. Proximity to major cities is also somewhat of a plus for a day of exploring a new place, but again has to be RV friendly.
TL?DR: Looking for a cool vacation idea.

Oh, OK. North, South, East or West? pick a direction and I will google and ask my Wife. Her parents owned a few RV's and she spent quite a few vacations traveling around the country with them in a Winnebago. |

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Tons of outdoor activities in the PF area, including tubing, rafting, hiking, a sky-bucket thing to the top of a mountain, etc., also a decent-sized shopping/downtown district in Gatlinburg. As for big cities, it's about an hour from Knoxville. It's about seven hours from you if driving a normal vehicle, nine hours in an RV.

CMan, I would probably like to go South or East. Going North, you tend to start getting colder and July is always a crap as it is. I just don't know of anything West of here and it is pretty flat. I have heard Northern Michigan is pretty, but being so close to Canada makes me nervous.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge will be very similar. Pigeon Forge is a bit touristy in places, but Gatlinburg has really fun stuff going on. And if you like the idea of going to national parks, the Great Smokey Mountains National Park is to the east of Gatlinburg. The park is bordered by Cherokee, North Carolina on the east and Gatlinburg, Tennessee on the west, so it'll be very close to what you remember.

Gatlinburg is the shizzle for family vay-cays. Lots to do, especially for families, and not outrageously priced. The weather is fantastic in the summer (cool and no humidity) and it's just gorgeous up that way. Went as a kid, had a blast, been wanting to go back for a while now.

Definitely hit up the southeast TN area. I used to take a trip every year with a couple of friends to an area called Chilhowee. It has a nice waterfall within a couple miles hike of the campground, a small lake nearby you can swim in, a few nice mountain top lookouts, and white water rafting on the river nearby. On certain days, they close the flood gates to let the river drain which leaves several pools of water to swim in and rocks to play on. Not sure how into rocks and rafting your daughters are.

Pigeon Forge is a tourist trap and a half, and Gatlinburg is worse, but I always had a great time as a kid. They have tons of go-kart tracks in Pigeon Forge, the Ripleys Museum, etc. The aquarium there is also nice.
