    Posted: 22 June 2004 at 1:45pm

Ive been told alot of things about porting and if anyone understands about how they work and can help me out please leave a reply. Does porting in the barrel have any more puposes than to cut back on the sound when the gun fire, do they make you have to use more air, is it bad to have them halfway down the barrel like on the stock 98 barrels.

If any one can help thanks.

Porting also Help your internals if your Barrel was cloged.

Porting can also give Extra Accuracy Ex: Teardrop, it has that Special porting which gives it better accuracy.

porting really has nothing to do with accuracy.  the spiral porting is a marketing gimmick and really just affects the amount of noise.  barrels with lots of porting will be quieter than a barrel with no porting.

spiral porting decreases turbulance in the barrel making it more accurate. also more porting results in less noise.

Yeah, I heard that the ball sorta "floats" and the porting allows the air to escape reducing wobbling in the barrel.

Thats funny, if you ever take a fluid dynamics class you will learn that turbulent air layers actually reduce air resistance on an object and allow it to travel straighter and faster. Same as how a fast ball has proper back spin to trip into the turbulent air region to allow it to travel faster than a curve ball or slider.

As for porting, it does several things. It allows excess air pressure to escape or enter the barrel. Blow back pressure can be alleviated with porting. The way air escapes also effects the sound propogation from the end of the barrel. Lastly porting helps clear broken paint residue from the barrel.

As for porting adding accuracy, thats just bs. Sideways spin on a paintball would do nothing more than cause it to hook or slice.
Which falls faster, a lead ball or your IQ after reading some of these posts?

If that was true, then all ported barrels would have spiral porting.

The holes make it quieter, and make it look pretty. The "spiral" effect wouldn't make the ball spin, it'd make the air behind the ball spin. Much like the tip of an airplane wing- it causes the air to form a tornado-like effect and produce drag on the plane. Fortunately, there is no spiral effect, which would probably make the ball shoot horribly.

If paintballs where more precise then there would be a demand for rifled barrels.  but they are too unpredictable to have a 1:12 twist or something similar.  Remember real guns use rifling and that puts a spin on the bullet.

blame it on the irish....

You dont need to put a spin on a paintball the same way you have to put a spin on a bullet.  Bullets are long and oddly shaped and would tumble in flight if not gyroscopically stabilized by rifling, reducing accuracy. Round shot, on the other hand, does not need the rifling as tumbling in flight for a paintball is less an aerodynamic problem than it is in a bullet.  In order to achieve any aerodynamic benefit from spinning the ball, it must be an extreme backspin and this can really only be achieved with a flatline.  Porting does nothing but silence.
I make all my own mods.

Hence I said REAL guns use rifling and you can't with a paintball because of inconsistancies among other things.

A round projectile such as a paintball somehow having the spin effect like on bullets i dought would decrease accuracy because this effect had been used even when we fired round projectiles in muskets and cannons. Though rifling in muskets did not come somewhere until late 1800's. 1880's i think. So if this effect was somehow put on a paintball it should increase accuracy. Though it would seem to me that the flatlines spin would still function better.

Think of it this way. A bullent is shaped like a football. A paintball is shaped like a baseball. How do you throw a football? With a spiral. How do you throw a baseball? With a backspin.
