first, how do you get the batteries in so the door will shut

second, is there an easier way to open and close the lid?

Try a different brand of batteries, some fit and some don't

Also remove the lid springs, just unscrew the two big grey screws on the lid, remove springs and enjoy

You just have to pull the battery door all the way out and down. After that put in the batterys in the  battery slot then push the door back until it snaps closed. Be careful though the EVOII is pretty poopy quality and the "locks" or hinges (whatever you want to call them) that hold the battery door shut can break pretty easily.
(I'm a nob with no clue about almost anything...)
