I though of this in the topic someone had about other paintball gun ammo. Anyway, I have a potato gun. The barrel is 1.5"x4' and the combustion chamber is 3"x1.5'. I also have a battery powered ignition for constant sparks, no more crappy piezo ignitors! Any way here are my favorite loads to put in it, and yes, I have shot all of these at one point or another
Be careful if using one, I am |

Haha, I love potato guns. I need to play with mine sometime soon. Like tomorrow..Gas soaked steel wool? I shall try that. I've shoved a wad of newspaper down mine, followed by 70 PMI premiums..good stuff. Mine is so loud though, I'm surprised the neighbors haven't called the cops. I've gotten them used to loud noises by now though.

Yep ^^^ that looks just like mine..Except I haven't gotten around to painting mine. Potato guns are probably the most fun you can have with pvc pipe.

i made a cannon a while ago with a buddy of mine, i made the chamber much too long though, so it was difficult to get a good mixture. When we did get a good mixture though the cannon would explode a pop can with on orange. I considered making an air pressure cannon, but i did not want to spend the time or funds to do so.

I have an air cannon. It's currently out of commition because the wiring fell apart and I'm too lazy to fix it. It also needs a new valve, which I am too lazy to go buy. But I agree, mini nerf footballs rock, although you have to have a 2 inch barrel I think. They use them at scenarios for anti tank and taking out buildings.

I attached an autococker grip frame to mine and hooked a rot to the piezo igniter so I can just press the trigger a few times really fast and it'll go.
I use stress reliever squishy balls. They bounce off the target and are usually colored brightly so you can find them, plus they're reusable and not likely to kill anyone if they manage to get hit. |

Let me see if I can dig up a pic of mine...
Nope, can't find a single one...and my brother has the camera on vacation...
But anyway, mine's combustion powered, with a gas grill igniter. It's made from 2" PVC, with a 3" combustion chamber. The barrel's about 5 ft. long and the combustion chamber's about 1 1/2 ft. long. I've shot numerous vegetables hundreds of yards. Nerf rockets are fun to shoot, too.

How to Make a Spud Gun:
Disclaimer: I am in NO WAY liable for any injury, property damage, etc. BUILD AND OPERATE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Do not operate in residential areas. Use common sense. Check with local law enforcement before building any spud gun. What you’ll need: - SCH 40 PVC (buy 10’ of each bore size- it’s cheap) ® 2”- This will be the barrel ® 3”- This will be the combustion chamber (Do not use any thickness except for SCH 40) - These PVC fittings: - 3” to 2” reducer - 3” threaded female adapter w/ cleanout plug - PVC cement - Gas grill igniter - Hacksaw - Sandpaper - Drill Where to get materials: Most of these can be found at Home Depot. The igniter can be found in any place that sells grill supplies. I got mine at Wal-Mart. Let’s Start! First, take the hacksaw, and cut a length of the 2” PVC for the barrel. Make it about 3-5’ in length. Then, cut about 1-1 ½’ of the 3” PVC for the combustion chamber. Now, you probably won’t like this part, because it’s the most tedious. You’ll be sanding. Sand each end of the PVC thoroughly, on the barrel and combustion chamber. I know, it’s boring, it takes a while, but it’s better than having the joints of your gun blow up. When you’re done sanding, it’s time to start cementing. Spread some cement on one end of the barrel, and on the inside of the narrow part of the reducer. Fit the pieces together tightly, inserting it with a twisting motion, until it won’t go any further. Then, cement one end of the chamber, and fit it into the wider end, which you must also cement, using the same technique. Cement the inside of the non-threaded end of the female adapter. Do not cement the threads. Cement other end of the chamber. Insert using the same process you used before. Next, bore a hole with a drill in the side of the combustion chamber, just wide enough to fit the grill igniter into. Take the grill igniter, and cut the two wires about 1 ½” long. Strip the ends. Hang them close enough to make a spark jump between them. Use tape if necessary. Cement it into the hole tightly. ALLOW TO CURE FOR NO LESS THAN 24 HRS. WITHOUT BEING DISTURBED BEFORE USE. Using the Spud Gun: Find a good place outside of any residential areas. Get yourself some potatoes, green tomatoes, nerf rockets, golf balls, anything that will fit nice and snug down the barrel. If not, use paper towels as wadding. Unscrew the cleanout plug from the threaded adapter on the back of the gun (you did remember to screw it in, right?), load your ammo down the barrel, using a broomstick as a ramrod, spray a burst of hair spray (I’ve found White Rain works the best) about 2-4 seconds, allow a bit of oxygen to enter the chamber, then plug it back up before the vapors escape. Aim downfield, brace for recoil (I also recommend ear plugs), fire igniter, BOOM! Watch your projectile fly hundreds of yards. BE SAFE, HAVE FUN, USE COMMON SENSE. Edited by Homer J |

They are not hard to make, get a piece of pipe however long you want for the combustion chamber, preferably 3+ inches round, a much longer piece of pipe that is half the dimiter of the other piece for the barrle, a coupler for the two, and a screw in cleanout plug for the big end. The ignitor may be like this, but the continous spark bttery powered oned are better, and cheap stun guns are the best(find at ebay). http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId= 97311-451-4984638 Cut the big pipe as long as you want for the combustion chamber. Then use PVC glue to put the coupler and the plug on it and then mock up the barrle, but don't cut it yet. Make the barrle about 2/3-3/4 the volume of the combustion chamber and se how it looks, you can make the barrle as long or as short as you want, but the above measurments are for ultimate compression. Glue the barrel on and wait a day for the glue to cure. Be sure to take the screw in plug off the end to let the fumes escape. Now that the glue is cured, get 2 bolts (I like stainless steel because they will rust) for your electrodes and drill two holes in the middle of the combustion chamber right accross from each other. The rule is to get ones that when their lengths are added together, they are longer than the combustion chamber is wide. You need to cut them down and make a point on both of them so that when put into the pipe, they have a gap between their points of about 1/4". Be sure to put the wire for the ignitor between befor you cut them, because the gap will be too big if you don't. Put a net on each bolt from the inside to lock them into place. Wire up the ignitor and put the ignitor somewhere comfortable to fire. Use JB weld or good ol' duck tape to hold it in place, and you are ready to rock! There are many web pages about propelents, but AquaNet hairspray is my fav cause it is cheap. Get a thing to shoot out, ram it down the barrle, open the back up, spray some hairspray in the back, not too much though cause it will displace all the oxygen. Put the screw in cap on and fire. Chawoomf!!! |
