Anyone in here play bass? Me and some of my friends are trying to start a band and I got stuck with bass/singer. We have a really good guitarist and a pretty good drummer. I wanted to play drums but we decided that the other dude was best. I need some pointers on bass, I have never played it before and need to learn quick. Websites would be great. Ive written 3 songs and have a few unfinnished ones. I have no idea of what they are going to sound like. The music is going to be Rock, probably going to sound kind of like Audioslave's music...

When I play with my friends, we usually combine a trombone and my left
hand on piano. But one of my friends can play bass guitar too, it's
just fun to try stuff that is different.

all i can say is www.mxtabs.net, that place is awesome. Good luck. If you dont have a bass, but you want one, get a Mark Hoppus Fender Bass, those things are really nice.

Save yourself some trouble and not even attempt to mutually come up with a band name until much later. |

For pointers, this exercise comes in handy (if you can read tab)
And never say that you got "stuck with bass". Bass is a great instrument and is NOT easier than guitar despite the ignorance of guitarists. It will take time and devotion, like every musical instrument. For Inspiration listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus (les claypool), Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Grahm, Bootsy Collins, and Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. If you want to learn specific songs, Mxtabs.net is the best tab site i know, and if you need further help, i'm a member of musicianforums.com. My name is Flea333 on there. For an easy, but great song to learn is Iron Man by Black Sabbath, or Sunshine of Your Love by Cream. Bass is the heart and soul of a band and without good bass, the music will fall apart. You are the foundation of the band. Always follow what you want to do, not what you're band members tell you to do. If they insult bass and say it's not important, chances are they aren't worth a bassists time and devotion. Last thing, if you want to join musicianforums.com, you will find that most people are incredibly nice and are willing to help without being rude. Have fun with Bass and keep rocking.

I play the bass, and so does SeaWolf. Maybe it's just the style I play, but for me, bass is easier than guitar... it was definitely easier to play my first song on the bass than on the guitar. |

Well, as said before, don't even think of a band name for now... Bass is completely different from guitar, it has many techniques to be learned, my favorite being slap. If I were you, I would stick to some ESP basses to start with, or even Ibanez. Go to mxtabs and learn some songs, and go to the forums and ask around and look around for techniques |

I'm a drummer and have been considering crossing over into bass guitar for awhile now. It's always appeared to me that playing bass guitar is more similar to playing the drums than it is to playing 6-string, which is something I never did pick up very well.
