ANybody know anything about bows?

i love shooting bows...i have a compound bow and i have a long bow from a long time ago...they are awesome and i would love to hunt with one

Ok go for a compound bow. As far as Compound bows go Mathews are the best...period. I have a mathews F/X and I love the thing. Me and my dad both own Mathews.

Quiver- Quik 3 Quiver because its compact and you will never need more than 3 arrows on a hunt.

Arrows- Carbon Express

Tips- I think the best penatrating and most accurate are the Muzzy 3 blade.

Get the compound bow (harder to Master, but better overall bow ) , and some Eaton Game-Getter aluminum shafts , suggestion , get a bow Pin sight , and Practice, Practice, Practice , but , you know that already .

Been 20+ years since I'v bow hunted , got in a deer stand , and a squirrel  chattered at me for over 3 hours , guess what happened to the squirrel ? He got on my nerves one too many times (never did get my arrow back )

Shot both the recurves, and the compounds , the latter is Much less forgiving of mistakes in technique .

i own a PSE, i like it alot, except for the peep sight. but most bows do.

A recurve is nice, but for deer or hogs you are going to need one with a really heavy draw.

I'm more of a target archer than a hunter, and I used to try to do at least one hundred shots a day. I recommend carbon fibre arrows. They are narrower than aluminum arrows, won't dent, and are near impossible to break. They are more expensive at first, but if you shoot as much as I do, you realize that they last so much longer than aluminum arrows that in the long run they are actually cheaper.

There are so many brands of archery equipment it's hard to recommend a single one. I've always used Hoyt equipment, but for hunting I like Bear Archery, or Browning. If you want something fancier, check out Oneida Archery.

Just go with compound bow, more power behind the shot on average.  Also, if you are really into it, go with carbon fiber arrows.

Ummm okay there is about 2 people here that know what they are talking about and the rest are just guessing. Let me just say, if you do not have a bow right now you SHOULD NOT be hunting this year. It takes a lot of practice to get good enough to hunt. In my opion you should be able to stick 3 out of 3 arrows in a 3 inch circle at 20 yards and in a 5 inch circle at 35 yards before you should even consider stepping into the woods. Respect that game you are hunting, a poor shot will result in a missed shot or a wounded animal that may not die.

The only 2 that may know what they are talking about HondaXR and Traveler.

You really haven't been given any information yet worth listening to. so let me kill all the incorrect information that has been put up here so far:

Matthews is NOT the best, NAAG, Diamond, Hoyt/Reflex, PSE, Darton... are all great bows. If they weren't then the companies wouldn't be in business. PERIOD

Muzzy broadheads are big name and they are good but they are not the ONLY ones out there, I personally shoot Mechanical Steelheads. they fly perfect and you can ask the doe I shot on tuesday how well they work. she went less then 50 yards before dropping

a recurve is harder to use then a compound by far. Hunting with a recurve is a LOT harder then a compound and I don't suggest it unless you are a skilled hunter and very strong. Pretty much all modern compounds have "let-off" which means when you are at full draw you will be holding that much less weight so you can hold at full draw much longer and not spook your game by drawing at the last moment. The higher the number the more the letoff. It is also much harder to draw a recurve to the same spot everytime and hold it there, if you don't draw fully you'll shoot low due to lower poundage, if you draw back further you'll shoot high. I STRONGLY encourage against shooting recurve until you have mastered shooting a compoud

Aiming down the arrow takes a LOT of practice and is a good way to screw up an otherwise easy shot. Aiming with sight pins is hard enough when your shaking hard enough to move the tree your in (It will happen, just wait) In addition it takes a lot of "guesswork" in judging exact distance to the target as you have to adjust for range/wind. If you are going to be hunting get sight pins, some really good ones are Spot Hogg, Copper John Dead Nuts, TrophyRidge, Sidewinder. DO NOT get an archery "scope"

As for the person who complained about the "peep" - A "peep" is a piece of plastic of that is on the string, when you draw your bow it turns open so that you have to look through the peep to see the pins to ensure you are lined up correctly. think of it as the rear sight on a rifle. There is a "No-Peep" which I would advise against until you learn how to shoot correctly.

Carbon arrows are superior to aluminum, and are about the same price. They don't bend (They do shatter though) they are typically lighter, straighter, and will serve you well. Easton makes an awesome arrow, so does GoldTip and Beeman (sp?).

You have no idea what your getting yourself into, its an obsession that has consumed at least the last 4 - 5 months of my life and I love it. I love talking archery so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

I have a PSE Nova Vector IV.
The pull weight's set somewhere around 50 pounds, but it can go up to 70 I think. I'm not going to get a chance to hunt this year, so I haven't been paying much attention to the bow.

I like it a lot, and I used it to beat the pants off of a bunch of Mathews-shooting neighbors who are archery fanatics a couple of years ago in a competition.

Do you know if you will be shooting with a release(trigger) or not? Shooting shorter bows require the use of a release, as opposed to longer bows that you can pull back w/ your fingers.
