    Posted: 16 October 2004 at 7:48pm

My gun completley glass blasted down to the bare aluminum. Instead of sanding by hand like i always hear about, I took my gun to work with me and glass blasted it. It took about 5 minutes to blast all the old paint off the outside of the gun, and like 1 minute to blast all of the factory overspray on the inside of the gun. If it wouldn't get tarnished and stained I wouldn't paint it, I kind of like how it looks all bare aluminum.

I half assed polished the internals at work, but i figured that I'd wait untill I was finished painting it. In case any overspray ended up getting past the tape. I know it looks cool how it is, but even though aluminum doesn't rust, It'll tarnish and as soon as it gets hit by a paintball it'll stain the metal

Once it stains it, is there any way to get it off?

Yeah, I'd have to take it back to work and re glass-blast it. If I really wanted to keep it like this I could just clear coat the crap out if it. That would give it a layer of protection and keep it from staining, however it would make the bare metal look a little bit darker. ( As if it were wet ) I know it looks pretty cool, but the whole point of me blasting it in the first place was to paint it so it would blend in with my outfit that I wear.

very nice. yeah leave it like that. it would probably help so your color downt get all discolored from paint. like when paint hits your gun and discolors the black a little. it would also have a no chipping body. very nice idea.

Glass blasting and sand blasting are very similar. Glass blasting is spraying very very tiny fragments of glass onto an object giving it a very smooth and even finish. Sand blasting leaves a way rougher finish. If you were to sand blast your gun and then go over it really quick with some 1500 grit sand paper it would pretty much be the same thing as glass blasting it.

Using steel wool will get your paint off that's for sure, but it will scratch the crap your gun. If you do it that way you'd have to repaint it, or it'd look really rough. If you paint it make sure you spray a couple coats of sandable primer on it untill all the scratches are filled in. When the primer is completely dry, take a fine grit sand paper and lightly sand it to a smooth finish and then you're all set for paint and clearcoat.

Im using fine enough steel wool to where there wont be any big scratches.  Althogh I was planning on using primer anyways.

I've been sand blasting 98s for years. It's my favorite finish besides gloss black powdercoat.
