1000 grit paper is a little on the fine side, but will work. It helps if you do your sanding in the sink under running water, that will keep your sandpaper from clogging up, and will give you a better finish. Once you have all of the overspray cleaned up, and have a smooth finish, go over it with some good aluminum polish to give it a mirror shine. Don't forget to polish the hammer as well. Lay a piece of wet sandpaper on a flat surface, and slide the hammer around in a figure 8 pattern while pushing down on it firmly.

Using 800 grit paper will make the job a little faster, and still give a good finish.

For I will wander to and fro,
I'll go where I no one do know,

sounds right, just whatever you do, dont used a dremel sanding wheel, for some reason, i started mine with one, and stopped 2 seconds later because it was way too hard on the metal.

i would use steel wool right after you sand it down. sanding it gets that initial smoothe surface, but steel wool will get it even more smoothe, then use the polish.

1000 grit is by far too fine. Think of it this way, when I painted my gun, I scuffed the PAINT (blue stuff) with 1000 grit sandpaper so that the clear coat would have something to adhere to. 800 is about like sandpaper.

IMHO, the BEST way to get a mirror like finish without using a polish, is to use multiple different grits of sandpaper.

When I painted my gun, I had to scrape the paint off of the lettering ("Tippmann 98 Custom"), before I put the clear coat on. I think I used 100 grit to get the paint off, then started polishing with 400 grit until it was smooth, but not shiney. Then I followed up with 800 and 1000 grit sandpaper to bring it to a shine.

Good luck, and make sure you don't go too overboard. Just get the overspray off, and make it smooth. Don't go too far.

i used 80 grit to start off with then bumped it up to like 150 grit, then 200, then 1000 with water, then after all that i took a dremel with a little tiny buffer wheel and poured on the alumminum polish. my internals r so darn shiny now that i can see myself in them!

p.s. if you need n/e more info go to a-5 owners group and search around for it and they'll tell ya what you should and shouldn't use.

good luck!

Sand paper will only harm the gun. With sand paper, your taking the metal away as well as the paint. I'd only use steel wool. That stuff is cheap anyway.

What ever you use to polish, whether it is wet sandpaper, steel wool, or
polishing compound, all take metal off. Just the ammount that comes off
is different. I haven't seen the internals of a gun yet but the best course to
polishing metal (in general) is to start out w/ 1000 grit wet sand paper
working your way to 1500, to 2000, steel wool, and then the compound.
If it is pretty scratched up, start off w/ a scotch-brite pad or courser sand
paper depending on how bad it is. Doing this polished up my Stainless
Steel exhaust to an almost mirror shine (I didn't have the compound to
turn it into a mirror).
