ok! How much does the length of a barrel actually effect a guns range and accuracy. This is my science fair so I NEED ANSWERS!

I know the answer to this one for sure. The more length that a barrel has the more range and accuracy it will have as opposed to a short barrel in which the ball won't be as accurate or have as much range. so more length would be vital to getting the ball further. God luck with your science fair project |

And if the barrel is too long, the ball will have less accuracy and won't go as far as a shorter length barrel.

im sorry but he is partially wrong, the longer the barrel doesn not mean the more accurate or distance whatsoever, all those 18", 20", and so on barrels are pointless, about the longest barrel you want is a 14" because the paintball gets pushed a good 5-10 inches down the barrel, and you only need a little bit to guide the paintball somewhat accurate, the lowest i would go would probably be a 8" or 10" but some ppl like to be funny and get some kind of stubby 5 inch barrel. Basically if you have too long of a barrel the paintball actually slows down because of too much friction therefore doesnt travel as far and is less accurate, too short of a barrel the paintball doesnt get the about of air push it needs because gas it released too soon and doesnt go as far as it should.
The accuracy is more effected by your paint-barrel match, if you dont have a right match for your barrel then your accuracy could be horrible, and you may break tons of paintballs. You can test this by taking a paintball and putting it in your barrel disconnected from your marker, if the ball is too small for your barrel it will easily roll right through, if it is too big you will need something too push it out with, you should be able to blow the ball out like a spitball. if you get too long of a barrel you might as well just play barrel tag instead of paintball, well hope this is helpful for ya, if you got anymore question go ahead a pm me id be glad to help. |

the length of a barrel does not effect range what so ever regardless of what other people may say. accuracy...after 14 it decreases, below 8 decreases. a paintball needs about 7 in. of unported barrel to be set on an accurate path... then the rest of the barrel is porting which stabilizes the ball and continues to set it on an accurate path.
as said before, very long barrels decreases range. no barrels in the world though will increase range except for the flatline by tippmann(duh) and the hop-up.(by armotech). the flatline is curved and produces backspin on the ball which would, in zero gravity, make nthe ball rise. but we have gravity so, the rising of the ball and gravity cancel each other out and send the paintball in a FLATLINE. The hop-up from armotech is totaly different. it has to do with the styl of the porting. the porting holes are drilled in way so that the gas in side the barrel will lift up the ball and let it stay in the air longer. hope this helps |

yea, the longer the length has nothig to do with makeing the ball shoot farther the flatline is 8 in. and shoots 200 feet, (come on people) 12 in. and 14 in. are good sizes, that is, of course if only you dont want a flatline |

well everyone pretty much covered everything, so all i have to say is that a paintball statistically needs only 5-7inches of uported barrel to guide it. any further will decline its range. hrmm wut else. thats all i can basically think of

The Flatline isnt 8" its actual length is 14", try using a measuring tape it helps. |

anything over 16 is overkill and it takes more air which =less shots

I think that would depend on WHICH Flatline your measuring. Since the Flatline for the A-5 is 8 inches. The Flatline for the 98 is much longer, 14" sounds about right for that one. Oh and to get back on topic.... Shagster, you need to go do some searching on the internet, these tests have been done already to measure the effectiveness of differing barrel lengths. Your not gonna get a whole lot of scientific data here on the forum, and I don't think your teacher is gonna like that your source for information is a chat forum either!! Edited by FyreFly |
