You should have got a new one, most likely the fountain just ran out of

Heh, when I've gotten drinks from their and filled them myself, I see a
stream of carbonated water with a little pepsi coming out the
side. So not I just pu tthe edge of my cup between the water and
soda so i get pure soda.
