I was thinking today about the ballistic qualities of paintball guns. I figured they could probably shoot MAYBE 100 yards with the velocity cranked and shooting down at the target, i.e, with a height advantage. What do you guys think?

Sure, why not. Seriously though, that sounds like a really long way. Wind would severely affect the ball too, even if it is barely breezy. |

Um, how high up are you, 20 storeys?
That's a long, long way, and I'm sure you can shoot anything that far if you're high enough up... With the velocity that high, I'm also fairly sure you'd break the ball in your barrel/ breach |

Gravity alone might carry it. It would also depend on the shape of the ball in question, for you nimrods who will say "Uhh Tink, a paintball is ball shaped" I mean the overall roundness of the ball in question, i.e., o dents.

Flat trajectory, i dont think you are going to get that far, if you figure out, how many PSI a paintball can take, then put it to a little under that stress and fire, it will go as far as gravity will let it.
You can only shoot a paintball with so much force, once that force is met, the paintball will break, rupture, whatever. The distance it will go, without the paintball being ruptured from the force of the shot is how far it will go. A lot like "punkin chunkin" i would think. |

Welll, gravity will just carry it down tinker, not forward. Forward momentum is intertia, which wil eb lost over time couse of friction
Think of it like this If you hold a gun barrel perfectly level and shoot and at the exact time drop a bullet from the height of the barrel, both bullets, fired and not, will hit the ground at the exact same time. |

Ballistics- Anyone have data on drop VS distance with fixed velocity. Or drift VS distance at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 with 5, 10, 15 knot wind? No, because paintballs are not good for accuracy by design. If you could get it to come out fast enough to make that distance, and it's high drag didn't tear it apart, I still don't think you would ever be able to get it to shoot better then 48 MOA @ 100 yards. For relation, my .22L does < 3 MOA @ 100 yards. To get your maximum distance crank the velocity until it is almost breaking balls and then shoot at slightly less then 45 degrees. See how far it goes... with this data you can change your height with math and not have to go to Jupiter. |

A .22 supposedly can travel 1.5 miles under certain circumstances. -Tink |

Yes, even a standard .22L load can reach out there (around 1000-1300 fps) but energy and accuracy are nill at that range. 1.5 miles is 2640 yards. If I can shoot 1 MAO @ 100 yards with my .22L (on a good day with match ammo) I can calculate my theoretical group at 2640 yards. My group would be like 2.2 ft - but this is theory. Each click of my 1/4 MOA scope would move the impact 1/2 foot at this distance. This would be a dream shot... at these distances you have to start using artillary equations, hell the bullets own rotation probably shift it right .5 ft by the time it gets down there. The drop would come faster near the end of the range so zeroing out there would be very difficult, seeing the target would be difficult! People usually start .30 cal and larger at 500 yards. At 1000 yards the least I would use is 30-0-06. My .22L does very well within it's small bore limits. |

Not talking about shooting people with them... talking about pushing a paintball to it's limits.

If you had ideal shooting conditions (no wind, consistent velocity...) and a platform to stand on that you could fire from and give the paintball infinite time to drop as it moved forward, you would find that the paintball would still have an outer limit, distancewise, that its given velocity would not allow it to cross. Even without the ground to stop it the velocity would slowly be chewed away, quickly at first, then more and more slowly, until the paintball would make virtually no forward progress.
Edit: And I don't think you'll catch me trying to calculate just how far that is. Edited by reifidom |
