So I turn on my laptop this morning and I get a little window saying it can't load my user settings. I push ok, being that it's the only button there, and go on. I log in to find the generic grassy hill back ground and blue start bar. Then I go to firefox to find all of my bookmarks gone, not to mention my extensions. Grr right? Then, just because I'm fearing the worst, I go to my docs. All gone. All my pics, all my apps, all my documents, everything. About the only thing I haven't lost is my programs. I'm suing Bill Gates.

Edit: AHH!! I just went to one note to find all of my freakin notes and user settings gone too!! *Runs off to punch things*

Don't run off to punch things. What you need to punch is right there beside you. Punch it with the ground from about thirty stories.

My notes are printed but the rest of the stuff is gone. Most of it wasn't extreemly important but it still really really sucks to lose all of it....

Ya know what else sucks? All that stuff is still probably on my hard drive but I just can't see it because windows sees me as a different user....

i hear ya. try having an external 320 GB hard drive going dead from the standpoint of the master boot record gets corrupted. meaning, your data is there, but the interface is saying "data, data?!? we don't have no stinking data!!" that was a good movie btw.

anywho, i got all the stuff back(it was half full) after using a drive utility tool. it always sucks to lose stuff.

I wonder if there's any way to get MY stuff back....grr...This is the second time I've lost my pics too. I tried burning a bunch of pics I took over about three years a couple of months ago on my other comp and for some reason Nero didn't like it. Well, appearently since Nero didn't like it windows didn't like it so my entire "my pictures" fold was emptied out....

You should still be able to recover your documents. Browse from "My computer" to C:\documents and settings\your normal username\your normal username's documents" and you should be able to get them.

If settings refuse to load its generally a problem in the registry with those settings, it loaded you to a default user account and not yours, so it isn't showing you your normal "My Docs" folder. Likewise, the things in your "My Doc.s" folder aren't likely to be damaged.

Try googling for fixes. This can't be a terribly uncommon problem.

try this...

my comp/local disk C/documents and settings

then look for your old user name. might be under "owner" if its XP...

if its there you can get ur stuff back. also you can search for folder names. check to see if your HD space is still being used.

i dono about firefox or what it even is. im guessing its a web browser...

with whatever i have its saved in docs and settings/username/ favorites. it has a big gold star as its simble. if not look in firefox folder in program files.

edit you could also check your cookies and history if you use the sites oftin enough they might be there

Did you restart your computer? Please tell me you tried to restart? That would usually fix this. Your firefox settings would be in your application data folder, just copy it to whatever your new profile is if you made one.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Firefox does that to me about once a month. After learning from losing my bookmarks 5 times, I put them all in a Word document.

I've been over the whole linux switch sooo many times.  There were a lot of good reasons I switched.  It was inevitable unless I wanted to buy a windows CD, linux turned out to be a lot faster, no viruses, no spyware, no adware, no freezing, no stupid errors, ect.
