alright, my girlfriend wants to start playing paintball in an effort to try something i like and cause she loves shooting things. ive been looking around lately like a madman for a gun for her since A) half the time i play at a friends house cause his yard is like the size of michigan and we set up a few different fields there so i cant just rent for her and B) im not quite done with my a-5 so i cant just hand it over to her yet. now i know i should have the a-5 as my backup now seeing as during the summer i was debating about buying my first high end gun. that kind of went down the drain when i had to pay off credit card bills for clothes for school and birthday gifts for people and such. so ive been looking and i decided of course to stay cheap but upgradable. im either going to buy her some sort of mech spyder, a 98 custom, or a 98 pro. she says she likes the feel of the 98's more cause i had her compare, but says she likes how the spyders are more compact. so im still at square one. im gonna have a max of 175 to spend not including shipping costs, all i need is the gun. but i cant really decide, hoping to get some input. either stock 98 pro, go with a 98 in case she complains about the drop or double trig, or just got with some sort of spyder and put some crap into it. if anyone says spyder, which one would you suggest. thanks in advance for the opinions cause i aint got any idea what to do at this point.

Why don't you (or one of your friends) sit out a couple of games so she can try with your A-5?  It seems a bit wasteful to buy anything at all for somebody who has never even tried the game.

shes alreadys shot all our guns. last year we had a little paintball party, thats kind of what inspired the whole thing. thats where shes shot the 98's, spyders, my a-5, so on and so forth. the reason she isnt playing with my gun is cause shes intent on the idea of "i dont want to take away your time for playing" so basically shes refusing to play while i sit out or one of my friends does. so me just buying her a gun solves that problem. i wish things were that simple, trust me. worst comes to worst, i sell the gun off and give her that money for the car shes saving for.

Lame excuse.  I'm guessing she doesn't really want to play.

Borrow a friend's gun when he's out of town and play then (or just don't invite that friend), so she won't be "taking anybody else's playing time".

i know its a lame excuse.i think its that she has a bit of a marder complex and i think she has a slight fear of being shot in areas im not exactly aloud to talk about on this forum. i just told her to wear a really paddy bra.iunno, we'll see what happens. if she still doesnt play in the two months till i get my license, then ill just bring her to a field, let her use my gun, and ill rent.

can the mags take co2? cause the air/co2 feeds directly into the valve so that would be really bad for it, correct?

Mags can take CO2. No problem.
But, like all guns that run on CO2, a expansion chamber should be used.

I would also suggest something used.  Don't go spending $130 on a 98. They're resale value is bad, and you're not 100% that she's gonna get into it as much as you are.

I recently picked up a couple used 98s in the $50-range.

I second the suggestion on buying used. Used 98 is something to consider.

For the expense of a new 98, you can probably get an entire setup... mask, tank, gun, extras, in good condition. Browse online classifieds and eBay.

At worst, even if she decides she doesn't want to play... you now have a cheap loaner/backup, or could probably recoup costs by reselling it again. All without a large initial investment.

4 out of every 5 of my guns was purchased used. Why buy new at full price, when you can get "like-new" for less, or "fairly worn" for dirt?

I'm with Shorty - used is the way to go.  In a hobby where so many people feel the need to buy the newest kewlest every year, there are always tons of good deals to be had.

Most of my guns were also bought new, and I don't plan on buying any more new guns ever, except maybe one of those Blade Turbos.

i gona second vote a used Automag.

As long as its got the classic valve it runs just fine  on Anti Sphioned Co2.  If it has a RT,Emag, Or X Vlave then your gona need HPA for it.

you can buy a basic classic mag for less than $100 and it is MUTCH more modular than a 98c and ALOT more compact.

Also if ya get a mag you may find youself useing it over the A5 LOL.

i was thinking used and i went searching around for 98's and mags, i kinda ruled out spyders since 9/10's of the spyders i found had esp frames or soemthing of the sort and i think those things are too much of a hassle. now im just debating on the 98 and automag, but im still open to suggestion. liek you said, bearclaw, i may just find myself shooting the automag more than my a-5 if i buy the mag for her. i havent shot a mag since like 3 years ago. ive already got an extra  mask, 3 extra co2 tanks, an extra pack, extra pods, and all that fun stuff so all i need now is the gun itself. thanks for the suggestions everyone

Hmmmm... I like Automags... I've had three, down to one, which I use quite often... but for someone new, I'd go 98.

With a 98, you pull the trigger and it shoots. Can't really screw things up.
Automag triggers sometimes need a little 'finesse'. Hit it the wrong way, and it may not be kind to you. At least, that was my experience when rapid firing before switching to an Intelliframe. Just my opinion.

Hmm. I never had that problem with my old mag. I have frozen the valve (hell, 23*F and CO2 w/o expansion chamber will do that to any gun) but never, ever short stroked it.

I love Mags, but I gotta agree with Shorty - for a totally green player they can be a little tricky, with the short-stroking and all.  First time I played with a (borrowed) Mag I was breaking balls all day, and ended up trading in for a rental Procarb.

The Mag has better potential than the 98, but stock v. stock for a total rookie I'd say 98.

I'd say 98 cause the resale is still decent and if she liked it she could keep it for a long time.

I would just find a used 98c in good condition and put some mods on it cause i believe any tippmann will hold up better than a spyder
