See if we put a lighter on the end of the barrel.....
Ha, fooled ya. Nah for real though. I am in the middle of making an animated diagram to explain how the C3 works inside. And mid-process I thought of how to make another design with the use of propane (PEP Technology).
Keep in mind, this = rough idea. Very very rough idea. The air/fuel mixture and how to vent the spent gas, not known right now. Maybe have an electronic sprinkler style valve in the back, who knows. But any ways... The front portion is just air. Not compressed, not held in by anything. Just regular atmospheric pressure air. However once the propane ignites, it'll push the piston forward. The air will be supercharged out those holes at the back of that center bolt. This will propell the paintball out the barrel. And of course a really big spring to return it back. Is this design even possible? Who knows. The piston part is plausible. It would all come down to just the propane combustion chamber part of it all. And if that could be designed to work properly. |

Bah, that's some crap I threw together. What really look good is when I put more detail into them, like so...
http://img369.imageshack.us/my.php?image=a5anim5ck.gif It is paint, actually. I make a base/frame. Then just add in the parts where needed for about 20-50 frames (depending on the function). Then put them into a flipbook program, UnFreez. Quite simple. Edited by Mephistopheles |

He made a cartoon. But no, good stuff- basically it uses a piston just like a spring powered airsoft, except in this case with a compustion to power to piston. The trouble I would anticipate would be consistency, and making sure the piston was completely refilled with air during rapid fire. It's a good starting point, certainly, and worth further investigation. It would, however, require a relatively large amount of C3H8 to push the piston hard enough. That, plus rapid fire, may result in overheating. I think any C3H8 application will be difficult to adapt to semiauto fire because of the heat issue. Repeated rapid combustions will heat it up significantly, and that's the big problem to overcome. |

hmm this is getting me thinking, why dont we just skip the air source entirely and make a spring powered marker like the Airsoft ones? Ill Draw a Diagram up of it.... |

At that scale, I'm going to have to say the ball would go about five feet. There just doesn't appear to be a large enough volume of air being compressed. I mean, the piston is only moving the length of the bolt. The C-3 uses the expanding gas of the combustion to propel the ball, not to compress a piston. I am going to say your combustion driven piston concept, if you could get it to work in a small enough package, would help overcome the heat issue as hot gas wouldn't be traaveling down the barrel. I see the heat issue more as one of barrel heat effecting the balls than being a problem for the operator's comfort. I mean, people who use machineguns learn not to grab the barrel after firing, and designers have incorporated ventalated handgaurds for assault rifles to prevent burning, I'm sure we could do the same for a combustion chamber.

That's the idea behind that E-Volt concept marker. It's essentially an AEG scaled up to .68. |

No, the Evolt uses a compressor powered by a battery. Think of it like a nailgun and you'll be set.
And rednek, yes this isn't a 1:1 scale. It's not a sketch that is being shipped off for prototyping. The actual air volume required is completely unkown. It's merely there as a concept brainstorm. To get the wheels turning for discussion. Plus it's actually a new idea that doesn't involve paint knives. |

Except that the paint shotgun is actually a valid and proven concept, at least in preliminary stages. Scepter's working on a production one. Really, I fail to understand your hostility towards anything not strictly traditional.
ten years ago (or whenever it was) you probably would have been arguing against semi-auto too...

Yeah no..... a paint shotgun, in the sense of a shotgun, is stupid. It's been discussed far, far, far long enough to make that verdict. I like the idea, if it were perfected, it would rock hard. Question for meph, in your A5 animation, is something in the valve actually spinning? |

No, it's a cutaway. The first view is of the internal working of the valve. Then the exterior is shown, to give an idea of the airflow down the CVX channel. Couldn't show both at same time, so just did it that way.

*shrug* No stupider than any number of other paintball ideas. And clearly stupid enough to be put into production by a reputable company. It will likely be a hit in the serious scenario/MilSim crowd; certainly it's as valid an idea as any manner of paint-ordnance or vehicles. If the speedball crowd doesn't like it they can feel free to hang out in their little rectangle while we have our own fun in the woods. |
