Sure. Once. Then get a new gun. Vegtable oil is great for making french fries but not really suitable for lubricating your marker. While it is an 'oil', it does not have the viscosity or durability of industrial oils. Also, with use it will breakdown quickly and gum up the works. Use pneumatic oil or mineral oil like Hoppes, that's what they're for. |

Contrary to the popular consensus here, vegetable oil is an excellent lubricant. But, it contains no preservatives and since it is organic it does break down, oxidize and become gummy over time. One of the best motor oils in the world is based on oil extracted from the Castor bean. Even animal lard has better affinity for metals than does any mineral oil...but it is not practical because of long term degradation problems. When preservatives are added those chemicals actually reduce the lubricity of the animal or vegetable oils and fats. It is an ongoing research program, but so far "mineral" oil is what works best. |

Ethanol is a powerful solvent and has an affinity for water soluble chemicals ( in reality it even dissolves the sheath that insulates the nerves in your brain) but corn oil, olive oil, or p-nut oils are not. Edited by Bruce A. Frank |

Not exactly. Vegetable oils and animal fat oils can be better lubricants than the mineral oil. They have much higher affinity for metals than do the mineral oils. They just tend to break down more quickly. |
