If I have the oportunity to by a new car / truck or SUV what should I get?
I currenty have 98 Ranger with over 100,000 miles I will be trading in. I will probably only get $2,000 for it and I can hopefully come up with another $1,000 or 2 for a down payment. Current situation: I work 55 miles from my house so it has to get good gas milage, no I dont want a hybrid. I also have to consider this as an occational family car (wife, 2 kids) and will be taking road trips from Florida to NC once a year. I could afford a $400 a month payment over 5 years so I am thinking somewhere in the $23-27,000 doller price range with $4,000 down (hopefully). You guys are pretty smart, what should I get? |

Chevy HHRs are roomy, and get (I think) around 30 miles per gallon, although they arnt the best looking things on the road. Also, the new Impalas look good in my opinion for a family car too.

You can get a new civic for like 9k....Good mileage too. But why no
hybrids? Just wondering cause I know a lot of people don't like them
and I don't understand why. I'd drive one in a second.
Oh and what the hell kinda job diserves 110 miles a day? |

in short HHRs suck look into the impala, grand prix, or boniville. (not sure how much they cost but those are the cars that will treat u nice)
little back ground... i work for avis doing automotive work on 05/06 cars mostly chevy but many other models as well. the chevy HHRs suck! 2.2L 4cil. just doesnt have the power to move it when you need to. also visability is very limited. also we have had alot comming in with prblems. as for the impalas the 06 line while they look slightly different (front like a malibu back like a cadi or the other way around cant remember) are great! anyways we have them with 2 engine styles 3500 (3.5 V6) or 3900(3.9 V6) they also make it with a 302 small block V8. the V8 has a mode where it will run on 4 cilinders to save gas. if you opt for a V6 go with the 3900 it will last longer and be nice to you. another car to look at is the pontiac grand prix. i believe the gt comes with a 3800/3900 (we havent had 06s come in yet) the GTP model comes with the same engine but also comes with a factory stock supercharger... my boss whos been a mechanic for 25 years just bought one a few months ago. boniville is like the grand prix yet larger still sporty like the grand prix and has alot of power but has more bells and wistles. im not to sure about the prices but those are the 3 cars i would look at if i had the money to buy a car. PS NEVER BUY A RENTAL CAR!!! that is for everyone here. edit: i do my oil changes every 3k miles and i would recomend if you bought a new model car. how ever chevy only requires preventive maintaince every 7,000 miles. where as ford reqires every 4500 miles (oils darker on fords at 4500 than gm at 7k) dimler/christler require at every 5500miles. however i find their tranny is geard not to my liking. revs to high before shifting. it just doesnt give you the power like a gm or ford. I just thinking the same. I mean to travel that much, I don't think having a truck or a SUV would be worth the gas money. Go with something that has room and still enough room for ur family. I say go with the Ford Focus that's kinda has the station wagan style to it. |

Do you really want to spend that much? I'm pretty sure I could find you a car that would be perfect for you for as much as you were willing to pay for your down payment! I personally would sacrifice a tiny bit of gas mileage and go with a 1995 or newer Nissan Maxima |

Or if you really want to drop the couple-dozen grand, go for a newer Altima or Maxima, or even a 350z....who cares how comfortable the kids are, so long as you look like a stud. LOL Even a Nissan Sentra SER would rock your socks and be an awesome family car.....the Altima and Maxima are gonna have significantly more room though. All in all, you should look into Nissans, Sentra SER's, Altimas(preferably SE or SER model if you're a baller), Maximas(SE), or even go all out and get the 350z, the hottest car on the road bar none. |

please please dont touch american made vehicles they are worthless. If you want your new car to be reliable and made well please get a japanese car. I personally have an Isuzu trooper with 100,000 miles and expect it to last another 200,000. and to tell you the truth I would never buy a new vehicle, as they drop in value significantly as soon as it has any miles on it. instead I would look for a vehicle a couple of years old with maybe around 20-30,000 miles on it. This way if you ever want/need to sell it you wont be loosing money on it. with that said i would most deff go with a nissan Murano heres a review on it: http://www.automotive.com/2003/12/nissan/murano/reviews/inde x.html and if thats not working for you, just please just remember stay away from american vehicles!

Nice advice everyone and Merc I worked for Hertz so I know not to buy
an old rentel, man we beat the crap out of them when we had to
transport cars to the other side of the airport. Lil CelicaGT hit 80mph
on the highway ramps, weeeee!
I want to buy new because of the warrenty. Humm Nissan Altima and Maxima... That's a nice ride. Keep the suggestions flowing, Im sure I have alot of choices. As far as a GM being in my driveway again, I dont know. I do like the GM's cylinder deadoning on there V8's, really helps the hi-way milage. |

I'd say look into a Honda or an Acura. I drive a 97 Acura Cl,
awesome car, and my Grandpa got a 2005 Acura TSX last year, and
that is SO sweet.
Look into the TSX, it is right at the max of your said price range, but I belive it would be worth it. It's a 4 door, 2.4 litre 200ish Hp engine, it gets 20-25 mpg. It is sporty, but I have comfortably sat in the backseat (and I'm 6'2"). If the TSX is too much, check out an Accord, or even a new Civic (they are pretty awesome). I would agree with gt 5.0 stay away from American cars, my family has my Acura, a 96 Ford Crown Victoria, a 95 Ford F-150, and a 92 Nissan Sentra. The Crown Victoria seem to have semi regular probles, the F-150 is a great truck, but I dislike trucks, and the Acura is great. The Nissan has 200,000 miles on it, it has virtually never been in the shop, and shows no signs of wearing out any time soon. I do suggest staying away from American vehicles. |

Despite their not-so-swell crash test ratings, the smaller Kia's are good travel cars. My dad had one for a while, he travels quite a long ways for work and he loved it. It was GREAT on gas milage.

Why no hybrids? You can get insane mileage, and if you have to drive 110 miles a day, I don not see why you wouldn't want to invest in one.
