Kaoru Ishikawa
Kaoru Ishikawa was a leading member in the industrial community of Japan after World War II. He developed a cause and effect diagram known as the “fishbone” or “Ishikawa” diagram (Figure 1). This Diagram is generally used when looking for a specific problem. Along with his own chart he put emphasis on 7 other charts including: control chart, run chart, histogram, scatter diagram, Pareto chart, and flowchart. He also explored the concept of quality circles and led the way for them to be widely used around the world. Quality circles are groups consisting of about 7 or 8 members that voluntarily meet on regular bases to identify, analyze, and solve work related problems. Most of the people in a quality circle will be “lower ranked” employees from the same area of the company. However they will have at least one supervisor.
