    Posted: 27 February 2006 at 9:21am

I'm debating between two cocking setups for my 98C. Should I get a Full Boar Rear Cocking System and keep using the velocity screw to tune my marker speed or get a Rocket Cock II and RVA from Dead On? What does everyone think?

How does an RVA work? Does this eliminate the use of the little velocity screw on the side of the 98?

I would go with the RVA. It does eliminate the FVA screw. The way it works is that it adjusts the spring tension on the rear hammer to adjust how long the valve stays open for. The higher the spring tension, the longer the valve stays open for the higher the velocity.

if you can find it go with the full boar rear cocking system (not the new shadow) it makes the marker look good and it has a built in rear velocity adjuster.

Is this the setup you're talking about? I was looking at that but it doesn't mention a built-in RVA. The Full Boar Rear Cocking Shadow is the one with the built-in RVA. Maybe you're confused or maybe I'm missing something.

I didn't know it had an RVA; I definitely would reccomend a RVA, but if this has both then it's one heck of an upgrade.

Is there anywhere to find that? I see on pbreview that it's older and not available new. I went to the manufacturer site (fullboarproducts.com) and it doesn't even mention sporting goods let alone paintball. Ebay only has the newer one with no RVA. Any ideas?

So then I guess my best bet would be to get the Rocket Cock II and RVA.

Can anyone explain to my why you would want rear cocking? I mean, it makes the body of the gun longer with the beavertail. To make it look like a cocker maybe? I don't know. I can sort of see it on a Spyder since it helps in taking it apart, but I don't get the purpose on a tippmann.

The point of having rear cocking is that, by moving the cocking knob to the back, you can cover the large hole in the left side of the receiver, keeping dirt, paint, and other harmful material out of the internals of your marker. One other advantage to this is that some people complain that if they hold their marker to close to their face the cocking knob hits them in the face. Using the rear cocking system eliminates this problem.

The Full Boar Rear Cocking systems listed on Ebay should have the RVA built in. If you check out the Full Boar products listings on pbreview.com, you'll see that they made two different systems. The older one is the one with the cocking rod and guard rail for it. The newer one is the Shadow one; once you pull back on the rear cocking cap, it pushes back flush with the back of the marker, and does not move with each subsequent shot. According to pbreview, both products have an RVA built in. However, people complained about the RVA in the Shadow system loosening during use, resulting in velocity drops during a game. Some other reviewer said that in later versions the problem was fixed, but I don't know for sure. On the other hand, people complained that the older beavertail version had a tendency for the cocking pin breaking, knob falling off, beavertail falling off, etc. so I guess it's really up to what look you are going for and how much you are looking at spending. Either way I would expect to have to do some custom moding and maintenance to get it installed and working right.

The beavertail kits can be found on Ebay by doing a search for Full Boar Rear Cocking System; they go for about $35.

The shadow kits can be found by searching for Full Boar Shadow. They sell for about $50.

Or you could search for the Ebay Store Stealth Mode Custom; they sell both products, and I've bought from them before and they are a good seller. If you are unsure if these items have an RVA (the listing does not mention it) you could send them a message and ask them, but I am pretty sure that they both do.

I'm with rednekk98.  I think I hit my mask with the rear cocking of my Orracle at least a few times since I've owned it, but I have never even had my mask close to the side cocking arm on my 98.

Sure it looks cool, but I really don't think that rear cocking is very functional.

The Full Boar Rear Cocking System on eBay (sold by Stealth Mode Custom) doesn't include an RVA. It's a different model than the one on pbreview that does include the RVA.

I also find it to be a bit easier to manipulate when you "pinch" a ball with the front bolt and the marker will not fire. You just slap the fixed charging handle back and you're good. I don't really mind the spee-t cocker since it's aluminum and ergonomically shaped, but aren't the full boar ones just little nubs? It seems like they'd be tricky to work.
