The drive spring on one of our players A-5 is bad. The gun is not that old. Is there something that causes premature failure?

The spring needs replaced. When you fire the gun with no co2 it sounds weak. If you fire it with co2 it will sound like it is out of co2. I tried the spring from another A-5 and the gun works perfect. Comparing the springs the junk one is real flimsy with no stiffness.

I think what happened was the spring got squished together, and thus has less resistance.

Does the A-5 with the bad spring have more cycles on it than your group's other A-5s?  Like does he have an E-grip and go nuts on autofire more than the rest of you?

If you buddy is going to buy a spring all of your guys should buy a spring or 2 for backup you will save on shipping and not be out of luck if you have another spring failure. Get a couple ball latches too.

He probably left it cocked for a long time, and the drive spring was compressed, and weakened because of it.

drumlinefreek makes a good point. When you put your marker away, leave it uncocked. Otherwise, it will lose some of it's compression resistance.

No, some springs just don't have the life of others. More shots fired or being cocked for long periods MIGHT degrade the spring strength over time. Most likely the spring didn't get exactly the right heat treatment when manufactured (wasn't left in the heating oven long enough or the temps just weren't right). No big deal. You assessed it correctly, replace it!

Oops! Didn't notice that this initial question dates back a month. Didn't mean to bump something that is long past probably been fixed.
