Yes, in one month I will out on my own experiencing the joys of being dirt poor and living alone. I'm 18 and I'll still be in high school, but I make just enough to pay for rent and food. I figured I'd wash my stuff at my moms house and stuff, but I'm not really worrying about it.

So for those of you old enough (and mature enough) who've already moved out got any tips for me? Like what not to spend cash on (already supporting a bad smoking habit...) but besides that. Should I not go have fun so I can save cash and stuff?

Also, is there any way to put living on my own on my tax forms so I can get a break from the man?

Well I can't stand my mom anymore, and I think the feeling is mutual. We argue a lot.

Best of luck, might be tricky with that pay. That, or you have a hole of an apartment.

i think you should stick it out. there isnt much time left you can handle it, in all honesty it seems like your running from the problem(s) rather then solving them.

^ I lol'd at that.

Man, that smoking must really destroy your budget.  Other than that, I think you would do great.  Ive contimplated doing the same thing for the same reason, but then i realized i would be screwed.

Marry rich. Find some old widow, marry, sign a pre-nup, bam, your set for a year or until you get to college.

Or you could kill her.

In all seriousness, QUIT SMOKING. I know, its obvious, but it is more than likely going to be hard.

Credit Cards are not your friend, Debit Cards are a much better idea.

Other than that, I dont have much life experience outside of my house that pertains to you. Sorry I cant help more.

And your sig is awesome.

Fairly soon, this will be answered for you, and you'll find it isn't really a choice for you to make. By the way, if you want a spoiler and to know the answer now rather than find out later... the answer is 'you will not go have fun, but not so you can "save" cash, rather, so you can just barely eek by'.
Quote Also, is there any way to put living on my own on my tax forms so I can get a break from the man?
You won't get any real deductions as renting doesn't mean squat... however, you may take a lighter hit from the man if you mom no longer claims you as a dependant.

Best of luck to you. I lived with my parents for a long while... even after college. When I moved to my first apartment with my now wife... reality hit pretty hard as far as expenses go. And ma and pa were 200mi away, so doing laundry at their place and stopping in for a free meal wasn't an option.
Beforehand, I thought I had it all budgeted out nicely... but you'll find that what you put down on paper early on, doesn't quite translate to reality... so if anything, when planning your budget, aim for higher expenses and lower income to better prepare yourself.
All in all, even though we struggled, and continue to do so with our mortgage/expenses... it is quite a nice feeling to be out on your own. Very liberating... despite the constant struggle with money and damper on social outings.

Sorry for the ultra bump guys, but I haven't been home all weekend.

ProCarbineFreak - I'm probably gonna end up in Madison. My step brother went there and enjoyed the hell out of it, so I figured I'd apply. His frat house was right on the lake... kick ass.

ShortyBP - thanks for the good post bro. I already figure I'm going to be squeezing every penny I have, but 'liberation' > fun. Oh well, I'm sure I can get an awesome Twister party going on Fridays....

Good thing is the rent for the place I'm moving too is a third of my income. Only other thing I have to pay for is electricity, which is about 30 - 50 bucks a month, which aint bad at all. No AC, but who needs it anyway?

Quit smoking. You'll save like a thousand bucks this year. Learn 2 play your lungs.

I have been at a community college this semester and just about everyone in my classes are barely getting by, they have terrible jobs, are single parents, make crap for wages, and are trying to support themselves through a college education, and yet most of them smoke. Then they have the gall to complain that they wished they made just a little more money every year. Hey, how about you quit F'N SMOKING? WHAT A NOVEL IDEA.

Stoz: it really is quite a bit harder than that. I'm not saying they shouldn't, but unless you've had to quit smoking yourself, you can't really say anything.
I quit smoking last year. Thought I had it beat after 3 months without a cigarette. Then came a stressful day and a bummed cigarette from a friend, and it was right back to half a pack a day.
The gum and patches aren't really a fix either. They cost more than cigarettes themselves do (it's like $50 for a week of gum).

bennymusso: If you can't quit smoking, at least reduce the cost of smoking. If you buy a cigarette roller, you can cut your costs tremendously. A carton where I live is about $45, but I get the same amount of cigs for $15.
Buy a nice $30 roller, zig-zag tobacco, and some filtered tubes. Under $50 for all of it, and it'll be cost-effective in the long run.
Working daily and going to school is probably not going to work very well. The worst I've ever had to work was 14 days straight, and it was the worst 2 weeks of my life. Don't do it; if you don't have a day to recharge it'll be worse than living with your mom ever could be.

Just lock yourself in your apartment for like, a week when you dont have work, and make sure you have no cigarettes handy. You'll go crazy, but you can kick it cold turkey ;)
