    Posted: 07 June 2006 at 3:14pm

Just got a new All American in the mail yesterday and I screwed it onto my 98 that with the stock barrel shot predictably to the right.  Only now, it shoots equally predicatable to the LEFT.  If I look down the sights, its obvious that the barrell is off...pointing to the left.

At 1st I thought bent barrell.  But I put it on my son's 98 C and have NO problems with it.  So I'm thinking manufacturing defect in the end where the barrel screws on or an overall bent reciever (how you would do that without noticing problems with the action on the inside I dunno)

Heres where it really gets weird.  If I take my son's J&J, my (bent?) 98 is deadly accurate.  With the AA, I shoot left.  Stock barrel I shoot right.

His 98C is accurate with EITHER AA or J&J.

BAh...never asked the question.

Anyone seen a gun where the barrel doesnt come off straight?  Wouldnt there likely be performance issues elsewhere in the gun if the reciever was bent?  I cant see any bends in the gun...it appears straight until you look over the rear sight, down the front sight, lined up with the long axis of the gun.

Thats really strange, I dont know how to help..
I would turn the barrel 180 degrees and see if it shot the other way, then I guess you would know if it was the barrel. Maybe its your paint or somthing.

Take apart your 98 and check out the threads and whatnot.

maybe the two halves arent mating correctly, i read somewhere that sometimes if the screws are overtight this can happen...

There was a known problem with old Model 98 series barrel threads. Therefore, Tippmann changed the barrel threads about two years ago. They are only slightly different, I'm not sure if you'd be able to tell the difference by looking at the two sets of threads or not, but I suspect that you may have the old threads on your gun, and your son's gun, and the barrels, have the new style threads.

EDIT: A google search shows that guns prior to serial number 495,000 have the OLD style threads.

I tried turning the barrel.  Then took it off, got down on the floor and rolled it like you would a pool que.  The barrell looked ok, and shot ok on my son's gun.

I'll be taking it appart this weekend and see if the problem still exists when I put it back together.

Thanks Shub.  I dont suppose youd know if Tippman offered to replace the halves?

i have an older model 98 as well as a newer 98 custom. the threads are slighty different. if you switch the two stoch barrels from the guns you can tell. i also have a jj ceramic the will screw into either gun. so i think even though the threads are different the jj threads fall somewhere in the middle because they work on both guns.

I don't believe they do...the catch is to look for barrels that were made before they switched the threads...used barrels on ebay may be your trick. Worst case scenario, County Sports sells new receiver halves for $65 a pair.

Perhaps if you called Tippmann, they could tell you more imformation, or an easier fix on the thread issue...I'm sorry, I cannot remember any more about it now.

Also remember that the 98 threads are VERY coarse, so it could just be the barrel "wiggling" around a bit.

But yeah, I'd check out if you have the new or old threads first.

Thanks again, yall.  I think before I sink too much into it I'll consider just buying a new gun and letting my 10 year old have this one/keep it for a back-up.  Looked on e-bay and saw some pre-ACT 98 CP's with RT's already on them for 150 bones.  Thinking 60-70 for a replacement reciever to still have a M98 that will never have an RT vs. a CP WITH an RT loaded on it for 90 bucks more?

Fathers day is a-comin'.

Yea, about that...what is this election I keep seeing so many posts about?  Is this a real thing or is it sort of a spoof thing?  Never been on a board where they elected officers.

I took the thing all apart and put it back togetner carefully, not overtightening the screws and yep.  Still off.  Cerial # in the 300,000's.  So I'm guessing its the threads.

Fathers day is next weekend.

The plan is to trade barrels.  The reason I didnt really want to is because the new AA was supposed to be...my fathers day present.
