Well, I (stupidly) took my PC up to scout camp to teach a modified version of the computers merit badge (one that you acctually learn something with). On the first day my hard drive crapped out on me. It could have been because of the long slightly bumbpy drive to the camp but it was stored upright and its been on bumpier roads and the case didnt fall. Or it could be some dumbass in the cabin knocked it down or damaged it when i wasnt in the cabin and I dont know about it.
Either way, we've tried everything, it seems the problem isnt data, the hard drive isnt getting power. We've tried switching PSUs, wires and all that jazz, none of it works. The main reason I'm asking is I have 20 journals for AP english due on friday and they are all on that hard drive. Ideas on salvaging the drive? I'm calling Seagate and a few tech groups tomarrow to see if they can fix it. Thanks in advance |

Oh man, I was going to suggest buying a new one, because it's more than
likely beyond repair, then I read the part of all of the AP journals,
idk what you can really do about it, it's more than likely internal,
and fixing it would require opening it. Soooooo......I'd just
first contact the "professionals", and if that doesn't help, just start
retyping everything.

like mehs stated, take it to the pros, and let them do their thing. Just note with a request like that, it may get pricy for the amount of time given to them to retrieve that data. You may have to start from the beginning if you opt out from that choice. Good luck.

We're calling a local tech support group, they have good service we're told, they also run the local tech radio show.
I'm hopeful kinda because it does seem to be a power issue, the drive doesnt vibrate or move or anything which makes me think the data must all still be on the disks, although I know crap about hard drives so maybe thats the fatal sign saying my drive and data is toast and go take it outside to shoot it. |

Unless your read/write head decided to catastrophically wreck ass into your disk platter, the data should just be sitting dormant on the disk. All that would need to be done is pull the platter and read the data off it. That could be rather expensive, but not as much as if the actual platter was damaged. This is why you always make backups. If you don't want to use disks, buy a cheap external hard drive and set it to automatically back up at 4 in the morning or so. |

Update:
We are going to try something else, seeing as it looks like recovering data will cost upwards of $600, soooooo . . . enter the custom repair. My dad found an identical hard drive and seeing as the problem seems to be in the circut board we are swapping boards right now. I'll post the results in a bit EDIT : New Update, I'm now posting on the newly fixed hard drive, total cost counting tools and new hard drive: $202, yay! ![]() Lesson learned, henceforth I'm backing up more often.
