Well call me unlucky. In the past 24 hours i have filled about 20
tanks (most twice) and have had 2 burst disks blow. Of these two
tanks both of them were on their second fill, because I purchased them
both for friends in value packs. One was a 9oz tank from a 98c
power pack. The other was from a Spyder Sonix value pack and it
was a 12oz tank. When they both went it was about 3 hours after I
filled them up, and both were out of the sun but in about 80 degree
temperature. I am using an electronic fishing scale to do the
filling. Should I be storing them in the refrigerator or
what. Thx.

No not the Fridge... Just keep them in a cool room... With no direct sunlight on them.

When you fill a tank , its a standard practice to leave some room for gas expansion , for example; If you're filling a 12 Oz tank , give it 11 Ounces (by weight) and you will have roughly 10 percent room for expansion . 20 Oz , fill to 18 Oz max , you get the idea . No room for expansion = Bye-bye Burst disk . |

If it were truley necessary to leave 'more room" for expansion then the cylinders would be labeled accordingly. Although it is a good practice like you said to underfill, being that it reduces the chances of an overpressure and blowing a burst disc.

It actually is necessary. The 20 oz max is for 68* temp, indoors, no sunlight. But not good for real use. |

I know we aren't supposed to be disagreeing on the small stuff here, but thats not at all what standard practice is at most places. Paintball tank manufacturers have accounted for this extra room. 20oz tanks will hold far more than 20 ounces. A full tank is only 3/4's full by volume. I don't care how full your tank is, you leave it out in the sun the burst disk WILL blow. You could fill a 20oz tank with 10 ounces and blow a disk if you leave it out in the sun. Rise in temperature = rise in pressure Rise in pressure = blown burst disk. |
