So yeah, I got my awsome Dell on ebay the other day...Well, I had my GeForce MX 5500 in it for the last day or so because that's the best I had around. So I ran to Best Buy today and got the best one I could afford, a GeForce 7300 GS. It's not a bad card and stuff, has the right pixel shader so I can play Blood Money and what not, but guess what? My freakin mother board doesn't have any PCI-E slots!!!11 All it has is normal PCI slots! I should have known better, I just wasn't thinking about the fact that the slots are different with pci-e , and I can take the stupid card back, but still! Besides, that's not the worst part. The damn thing doesn't even have an AGP slot! So I'm basically screwed as far as a gaming machine goes.....Unless I can find a really good pci card, or like an adapter, it looks like my 3 gig processor and my gig of ram is gonna go to waste....ggrrrr.......

I need to change my sig to "wanna be computer geek"....I'm such a loser...lol..

Well, what I'd do is sell it on ebay (and hope you get as much as you paid for)...or what you could do is buy a new motherboard, (MAKE SURE TO DO YOUR RESEARCH THIS TIME), with the same socket for the CPU as the dell has.  Also make sure it will work with whatever kind of ram the dell has.  After that, buy a new graphics card, and you'll be on your merry way.

Yeah, I'm lookin into mother boards right now....I'm finding it a bit over my head actually...Is RAM and the CPU socket the only things I have to watch for? What about power supply and case dimensions? Also, just to make it easier, any hints on the best way to find out the goods on this stock mobo? Thanks, I hate feelin like a newb....

Well, Dell might have a proprietary connection on their PSU like a lot of Compaq machines have, I'm not sure though, otherwise everything else should work no problem as long as you have the correct socket for the cpu/correct RAM.  Post a pic of your case, and maybe even the PSU end cable that plugs into the motherboard, and we'll be able to find out.

The easiest way you can find out what kind of socket your CPU is using is download CPU-Z, you can get that here, and you might be able to find out the type of ram as well.

Pwn't. That sucks man. My old Dell used to have PCI-E. Weird.

Dells really don't make good gaming machines.

If you can't build your own, there are some sites that allow you 'build' custom computers and order them.

I ended up trying to upgrade my Dell, awhile back, then just said 'eff it' and built a whole new PC. It's really not that hard if you're willing to put some time in and learn a bit.

Similar thing happened to my cousin.  He bought a PCI video card and his computer only has AGP slots.

In fact, when he took that card back, he bought an MX 5500 instead.

You might have better chances on Newegg, you can really really narrow down your search.  Go on there, find a board or two that works, and then search for that board on Ebay.

Custom built is the only way to go. I'm lucky to have a pretty good friend who does that stuff.

Dude, you're gettin' a Dell.

But yeah, I built my computer, built my last one, and will build my next one. Best way to go.

Yeah, I can't decide if I'm gonna just sell this one and build a new one, like I should have done, from the ground up, or just replace the mobo...Any tips on building a new one?
