Metal drive cones are AWFUL. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.

I find installing/uninstalling the Rip to be easy, but it can be confusing for a newbie. It is good if you have a jam or if you want to chrono without using batteries. Very few people use them for backup if the batteries die, because the board will tell you when you need to replace them.

If anything, it makes it slower because the main rod is heavier.

By the way, the metal cone will kill your motor.

Rip-Drive from what I have heard is a saver.. if your battery dies, you use the Rip-drive to stock balls up so you can keep firing fast....that's what I thought the Rip-Drive did atleast.

Tippmania , The rip-drive will keep you firing , but it'll be anything but fast , you'll be cranking the drive cone by hand , that is,,, when your not shooting .
SL68-II , micro honed and polished .688" bore . Tuff Enuf .
Widowmaker , under construction

I have never seen anyone continue to play more than a few seconds when the electronics die in the Halo. RIP is just too awkward to use effectively. Dead batteries don't sneak up on you with a Halo. My red light starts flashing 15 to 30 minutes before it lets me down. A single 9 volt battery in your pocket will provide back up for a whole day of play if the AA batteries die. Nine volt'ers are too expensive to use all the time, but in an emergency, pull the AA bundle block and snap on the 9 volt.

The inertial weight of a metal cone AND the weight of the RIP wheel actually slow the speed of the cone movement. And they load the motor shortening battery life and possibly shortening motor life.

I have used the rip drive in a scenario game before. It helped because my Halo didn't start flashing until right when it died. I went back in with my Halo still dead and little did I know that I would need the power of the Halo to help me. I almost got bunkered by a guy running straight at me.

I have never had a Halo die on me. If there's ever a problem with it, it is not battery-related.
