    Posted: 27 September 2006 at 1:30am

I'm a newbie and I'm getting ready to go out on my second paintball session with my new 98 Custom. The only problem is that I tried to adjust the rear sight and the dove tail popped off! From what it looks like, I would have to actually open the gun in order to put it back in. Is this true? Is there any easier way to get it back in? I've heard horror stories from noobies about opening their guns for the first time. I think I'd rather let some more experienced players answer. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

LOL, you really do need to get the experience of disassembling and reassembling your marker. As for the rear sight, I took mine off the second day I had the marker and I have never missed it. Most people sight by looking down the side of the barrel or watching the trajectory of the ball. How about all those to center feed designs that have no sights? Learn your marker, both in operation and function.

Thanks for the response!

Yeah, that was one of the questions I was going to ask, "Do you really need the rear sight?". I just need to find an experienced player to walk me through disassembly without messing everything up. Once again, thanks.

First open the manual to the schematic view of the marker (or down load it from this Tippmann web site or from the Tippmannparts.com site)

Spread a large white towel out on the kitchen or dinning room table...some place where there is plenty of room...preferably over a non-carpeted floor. Sit down, lay all the tools out (not many needed, set of Allen wrenches) and start a methodical disassembly. Note which screws are different length and which pins are different length. Don't let the front sight spring go flying. Don't let the front sight shell alignment pin (a short one) get mixed with the other pins.

It ain't rocket science and is a necessary skill.

Yeah.. it really isn't hard, everything has it's obvious place.. I do have an A-5 though which is supposed to be "easier" to strip and put back together...looking at the diagrams though they aren't too different. Just follow Bruce's instructions, eventually you will have to strip you Custom 98 so you might as well learn it while it's new rather than old, it's amazing how much crap gets into the 98 compared to the A-5....

Welcome to the forum!

You dont really need the rear site, I never found much use for it.

When you have the time, take your marker apart and just get used to cleaning it and learning where everything goes.  Its isnt that hard in my opinion.  If you have any problems, post it on the forum or look in the manual that came with the gun.

Just start unsrewing the screws and remember where they go by either placing the screws around the marker to where it came from or just looking at length. I still put everything in the relative area where it is supposed to go just to be able to find everything faster. Really simple and soon it will be so easy, you will laugh at the time you were scared to mess anything up, esecially when it is a Tippmann.
