Well, my ratchet in my A-5 finally broke, so instead of spending $1.50 for a new ratchet... I'm going to spend $35 for the Vortex Mod... do you guys have any personal tips for installation? It looks pretty easy but I was wondering if I should put anything else besides #9 Hoppes Oil on the Ratchet to lube it up?

The new metal ratchet needs grease.  No ifs ands or buts.  The installation instructions will tell you this.  If you don't use grease, you will void the warranty.  I went with a synthetic grease with teflon called Super Lube when I did my Vortex Mod.  Safe for platics and metal.  Not gooey or thick like other greases.  Very viscous and slippery which is necessary if you later decide to use a QEV with a Super R/T or Egrip.

Ok, so you HAVE to have grease, I can most likely pick some up at my local hardware store...how much does it need? I already have a QEV and an E-Grip.

I've shot so many cases through my A5 I've lost count, the ratchet is working fine. How did you break it...?

Yeah I know.. because that dosen't happne to manypeople right? I mean they made the Vortex mod for no reason right? I'll admit, Ratchet Breaking is nowhere near as much of a problem as it was when the Cyclone first came out...those broke so easily! I just want an aluminum axel\ratchet so that, I never have to worry about it again. If yours broke.. wouldn't you do the same? It's a VERY big annoyance.

I definitely recommend a synthtic grease.  Something safe for plastics.  I put a liberal amount on.  Remember, you're going to have aluminum to plastic contact.  You'll likely be shooting fairly fast, so friction is the enemy.  I'll probably be checking how much lube I have every case of paint or so to make sure everything is ok.

Alright cool, one more ? is it possible to just put everything together, rebuild it, THEN oil it all up? Oiling in the middle of putting two and two together sounds rather annoying when the pieces are as small as they are

No, not at all.  The instructions tell you to lube the entire ratchet spindle and the ratchet itself as you progress through the installation.  You'll never get enough grease on the moving parts by lubing it after installing Vortex Mod.

You'll need needlenose pliers, a hammer and if you don't have an extra pair of hands, a vice.  Do not use the stock pins from the original ratchet.  Use the pins that came with the Vortex Mod.

Alright, will do, the instructions say regular lubrication oil is fine and dosen't void the warranty (non-grease) but I"ll most likely use some anyway, I appreciate the help and will report back after I start installing it.. it should get here on wensday.

Well, I waited a week to get the Super Lube I wanted before I installed mine.  Besides, on the back of the package it came in was this sticker.

VORTEX MOD INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS  THIS PART NEEDS TO BE GREASED, NOT OILED!  For detailed installation instructions please visit:  www.techtpaintgall.com/vortexinstall.html  NOT GREASING THIS PRODUCT WILL DAMAGE THE PARTS AND VOID THE WARRANTY.  (1 year)

Also, in the instructions is this:

6. Lubricate the axel and ratchet. Lube the end of the axel where it goes through the ratchet. The teeth of the axel where they touch the ratchet tooth. The top, bottom and inside of the ratchet where the axel goes through. The better lubricated the parts are, the easier they will install and the better they will work. The objective is to have as little friction as possible. We suggest grease like Dye Lube, or Shocker Lube to do this. Lithium grease seems to work too. Oil typically will not protect the parts enough. The only returns we have had are from those people that used oil to lubricate the parts. Use grease.

I don't know.  I have no experience with either one.  I went with the Super Lube because it was in the arsenal where I work.  I'd look them up on pbreview and see what you can find there.  After looking them over there, ask the shop owner what he'd use out of the two.

You're not supped to use "grease" or much "oil" on the stock ratchet... it makes it become brittle and cracks....
