Alright so the burst disk went out on my 68/4500 crossfire tank.  So when I remove it from the tank is there anything special I should do besides removing all the air?

Any help is appreciated.

LP or HP disc? Air should be all gone by now anyway...

Isn't the air gone now??? Which disk are you speaking of? My Crossfire valve has two; a high pressure disk the holds direct tank pressure and another that holds the regulated side.

The safety disk on the tank pressure (my tank's operating pressure is 4500 psi) is 9000 psi. The safety disk on the regulated side is 1800 psi.

Yeah the air is gone now, don't know what I was thinking.  The air completely leaked out once it happened. The crossfire valve does have two disks but not sure which one it is right now since my tank is at home and cant remember.

Now once I find out which one it is, does it matter how I replace it?  Should I just buy a new one, take out old out, and put the new one in or is there something special to do?

The one closest to the threads (where you screw the tank in, those threads) should be the LP one. Look at the disc and you should see some numbers on it, like 1800 psi or whatever. The higher one is obviously your HP disc, and the lower one is your LP dsic. The problem I'm seeing is that the disc went off for a reason: LP could go if your reg fails and it turns into a valve, which is very bad for whatever is down the line. I have no clue how an HP could blow, because on 4500 psi tanks they are much higher than a compressor can fill (mine is 7500 psi.)

They usually fail from flash fills heating them up quickly.
Over time they weaken due to the heating and cooling. Eventually they pop very dramatic like.
Replace whichever one blew and get a nice controlled rate fill. Listen for leakage, or use soap/water mixture around the threads to check for small leaks.
Just make sure you use the correct psi burst disc in the correct place. If you get them backwards...you will know soon enough.
The burst discs on my nitroduck reg are at exactly the same level on opposite sides of the reg, but the LP one is on the side with the LP gauge, and the HP one is on the HP gauge side. Use either the manual or manufacturers website as a reference. Or go see an airsmith. Just don't guess.

This isn't my post..but it's related so figured i'd ask...I had a nipple cover installed and they removed one of the burst discs to attach it there... Now it's leaking and tightening it won't help.. Can i take off the disc and use Permatex thread sealant, rated at 10,000 psi after curing, to stop the leak? On all the burst discs i've seen, there never is any sealant on them, so was jsut wondering.  Thanks

You are going to have to explain this a bit more clearly. Do you mean that they removed the burst disk fitting then reinstalled it? Is the leak from the threads or from the vent holes in the fitting? When I have replaced burst disks I have carefully used the blue gel type LocTite (or Permatex). That has solved some leaking problems when new disks did not want to seal properly. LocTite on the contact edges and on the threads is OK. But, do not get any across the center of the copper disk. It may interfere with the disk's correct failure point.

I hope they didn't remove your burst disk fitting and used the hole for something else. Nipple covers are usually attached to the lower shank of the nipple they are intended to cover, not somewhere else on the tank valve.

They tried putting it on the nipple itself, but for whatever reason that didn't work... The burst disc was just used to attach the nipple cover line to, they didn't install something other than a burst disc back there.  I should have just done this myself...I removed the fitting and the actual disc didn't come off with the fitting. It wasn't stuck in the hole though, turning the tank over adn it fell out. Do you think it'll leak from here now when I put it back together?  You said to put some loctite around the contacting edge of the disc? I have blue threadlocker and thread sealant.. Which do you think would work better?  Thanks
