Turns out, I've got Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

For those of you who don't know, I'm a chef in a very popular restaurant in the DC area. This is bad news for me is I used my hands to do repetitive tasks every day (i.e. the lobster hell post) So, I have to make a choice. Either file for workman's comp and take 4 weeks at lower-than-normal pay, or just suck it up and try not to use my hand as much. This really sucks as I have a full house for new-year's tomorrow night.

Damn, that sucks.
Shame it's not someone else, someone who I could make jokes about it ruining their love-life...

Good luck tomorrow.

I fear that soon the same might happen to me from all my pizza making.  Being on the computer half of the day at school does not help one bit.

As for computer usage, they're pretty sure it doesn't contribute to CTS now, the New England Journal of medicine did a big study on it back in 03-04 and found that the biggest sufferers were construction, food service, and other service industry personnel (meat packers, etc). The majority of office-related CTS cases that the doctors saw while doing the study were mis-diagnosed lower-back nerve and disk problems that came from sitting in a chair all day.

I'd say take the time off. It's your health man, and also your livelyhood. If you dont take some time off to heal, you risk injuring yourself further, where you CANT work anymore. Not a spot you want to be in. Take the time off and try to live with the pay cut. Heck, use the time to pursue some other forgotten passion/ hobby that is less hand-intensive.

Wear one of those wrist braces when you sleep. It helps.

Wearing one whenever you can will probably help a bit.   My mom has carpel tunnel... I'll ask her how she deals with it.

As far as your choice... New Years Eve is gonna be tough for you to sit out on. If you feel there won't be any long-standing negative affects from missing a month's work after NYE... I'd go ahead and file for the four weeks immediately afterwards and rest up for a while. Not sure where that would put you financially... especially in this high cost-of-living area... but better to rest up and re-evaluate while you have the option, than to risk further damage leaving you with no options whatsoever.

As for kitchen tasks... just get a couple of those Magic Bullet machines. The informercial guy says it replaces all of the gadgets in your kitchen and does all the work for you. Sounds like a win-win to me.

No offense, but...  working with your current injury would be just as ignorant as the sports players who play on their injuries and end up furthering the damage.
