Hey guys, I bought my son a Tippman 98 Custom on eBay for Christmas and we are having a little problem with the marker, hope you guys can help.

This is the problem, when we load the tank and cock the marker its only good for a couple of shots until it needs to be cocked again, why do we have to be re-cocking the marker, what could be wrong with the marker.

Thanks…Al

I believe either your sear or hammer is worn down. The little lip on the hammer might be rounded out or the top of the sear is rounded out. Open the gun up and check it out. If it is one of those problems, call Tippmann and they will probably send you a new one for free.

Put a little oil on the "O" ring on the rear bolt (hammer). That "O" ring has to make a good seal as the hammer goes forward into the end of the power tube. When the hammer strikes the pin on the back end of the power valve gas is released to power the ball down the barrel. Some of that gas blows back around the pin valve and blows the hammer back to the cocked position.

If the sear were not engaging with the slot in the hammer the marker would likely continue to cycle in a full auto mode. But if the "O" ring is not sealing well enough some of the blow back gas escapes and the full recoil impulse doesn't get transfered to the hammer. It then can't travel back far enough to engage the sear. Also since it isn't traveling as far back as it needs to, when it goes forward it strikes a softer blow on the valve pin. The marker may fire a second ball but at greatly reduced velocity. Even less gas blows by so the short stroke of the hammer won't even hit the pin again with enough force to lift the hammer at all...it just sits there against the pin and you have to re-cock it manually.

It can be other things, but oiling things up is the first move...check for damage of that "O" ring.

When in doubt. If you ever notice the shots going down in velocity in about 2 or 3 shots, then it doesnt shoot out of the barrel at all. It is the valve bolts. The two bolts on the right side of the gun, are either loose or missing.

But do not over tighten them, because they will strip easily.

Also check the the drive spring (largest spring behind the rear bolt) is in good nick. Our guns at our paintball centre were doing a similar thing and dicaovered after the years of use the drive springs had started to break up so just swapped them and they are fine.
